Is it possible for Rafael Nadal to regain the Word No 1 spot at the 2010 Australian Open?
Is there a permutation that makes this possible? For example, say Federer loses in round 1 and Nadal wins the tournament? What of Federer pulls out injured before it starts?
yes its possible but none of the above will happen..
sorry.. but this is all a big long shot….
but nadal can win the tournament..
but federer will not lose first round or pull out..
It’s hard, but it is possible for Nadal to regain #1.
P.S. I don’t think none of those things above will ever happen…
not possible…

Federer is currently up by 1240 points.
the ATP ranking is complicated. it’s currently based on the best 18 performances over the past 52 weeks. And tournaments have different total points. the grand slam tournaments are based on 2000 points to the winner. The masters series are 1000 points, the ATP world tour are 500 or 250 points.
So the australian open is worth the following points
2000 to the winner
1200 for advancing to the finals but not winning
720 for advancing only to the semifinals
360 to quarterfinals
180 to top 16
90 to top 32
45 top 64
10 top 128
everyone who qualifies gets additional 25 points
last year Nadal beat Federer in the finals. So Nadal is defending 2025 points. Federer is defending 1225 points. follow that? those points will roll off the ranking after the tournament.
so if…
Nadal wins, his points remain the same. because he drops 2025 points from last year and gains 2025 points from this year.
and if Federer doesn’t even qualify, then he drops 1225 points from last year and gains none from this year.
but since Federer is up by 1240 points… he will stay in #1 position by 15 points.
That is very unlikely though and I think Nadal’s best hope would be for him to win the tournament and Federer to lose in the quarterfinals. This would result in Nadal having 9310 points and federer dropping to 9710 points. With a difference of 400 points.
Then again, IF Federer wins in the finals over Nadal, then Federer moves up 800 points and Nadal drops 800 points. making a difference of 800 + 800 + 1240 = 2840. And the point spread will be worse if Nadal loses in an earlier round. So it’s critical for Nadal to win this tournament if he has any dreams of regaining #1.
Yes it is definitely possible if Federer lost in the first or second rounds Nadal wouldn’t even have to win it again to regain the number 1 ranking and with Federer injured he is very likely to, however Djokovic also comes into play, if Nadal were in the final against Djokovic (with Federer having lost before the semi finals) and Djokovic won then Djokovic would be number 1, also if Nadal lost early and Djokovic made the final then he would overtake Nadal as number 2.
