How many of you thought Serena had a chance of beating Maria Sharapova? How do you think she should be ranked?
Now that she has won the Austrailian open. Should Serena be ranked # 1? Serious replies only. 10 points to the most sensible answer.
How important do you think that it was for Serena to dedicate the match to her half sister? Did it have an impact on her game?
you really have to look at the facts here on this, even though she did win this one, thats only one tournament so u reallly cant just up her world ranking just by her performance in one tournament, now if its becomes a thing like federrer always beating roddick than you u can have an argument but they series between them to untill now has been split so you just cant make her number one right now
Ranking is Irrelevant, just keep bringing trophies home baby!
I thought she had an outside chance. As for the rankings, it should go by the rankings system. One big win does not make you #1. in the world. You have to earn the ranking over a number of event results for a period of time. Consistently the best for the past 12 months.
Otherwise the rankings are meaningless.
When Serena brings her A game, she is incredibly formidable. After watching her decimate Jankovic in the quarterfinal, I knew it was a strong possibility. She will be ranked #14 based on the points earned from the AO Grand Slam. I believe that is an accurate rating. One tournament even a Grand Slam does not a #1 make. If she dominates this season, then I believe she will earn the #1 ranking.
I thought she had a chance of winning, cuz there was no “pressure” on her….nobody really expected her to win.
That, and Serena being a fighter, could make her win.
Mind you, I never ever expected she would win so incredibly easy.
Of course Serena shouldn’t be ranked nr. 1, she moves up quite a bit in the rankings, sure, but one win doesn’t bring her back on the number one spot.
As someone said rankings are based on a formula for performance….Serena was about a 3.5 point underdog to beat Sharapova but coming from an 81 world ranking the move to 14 is a significant improvement…this early in the year and with only one major played that seems quite reasonable….remember how long it took Agassi to return from a ranking of 381 (I believe) at one point…..
I watched all of her matches and you could tell she wanted it more than anyone else out there. After she beat the Israeli, I knew she was going all the way.
I dont think she should be ranked #1. Its only one tournament, she made a very strong statement and that #1 ranking will be something to shoot for and proove her dedication to the game.
All I know is its good to have her back in top form. She raised the bar of womens tennis and then was left behind. Now she’s back to raise the bar once again.
I doubted Serena’s performance because lately,Serena doesn’t seem much interested in tennis like her early days but she did prove the critics wrong.
No matter how “fat” she is,she’s a fighter.that didn’t stop her.if a “fat ass” Serena could beat a good shape “lanky” Sharapova then what more could critics give as excuse for Sharapova’s disappointment? Let’s give praise to the one due and stop being hypocritical.Sharapova is a Russian and is forever going to hold her home country at heart,Serena is an American even if she’s black and she needs our support. But I’m happy that amidst the criticism and back-lashing,Serena Williams is still strong. She will let Sharapova win whenever she wants to.
I thought she had a chance as evidenced by my question here the day before the match.
Serena was on a mission, so yes I thought she would win the tournment. She was driven by the fact that she wanted to dedicate to win to her sister that was murdered.
To be completely honest I am not a big fan of Serena’s, but when I saw the match up for the Australian Open Women’s final I thought that she probably wold win. I guess she has a lot more experience than Maria Sharapova. I don’t think that she should now be ranked #1 just because she won the Australian Open, she came into the tournament as an unseeded player and wining the tournament will significantly boost her ranking but not to number 1. I think that one of the reasons why she won is because she had a driving force behind her, she wanted to do this for her sister.
No, – she was away from the game for to long.
Tennis use continuous system for ranking – this way you usually don’t have major surprises like Serena…
i’m usually very sarcastic but since u want me 2 be serious, no problem! but i never thought williams would win. i watched the us open 2006(i think it was the us open anyways)with hardenne against sharapova and that girl’s serves, angle in which the ball was hit, i NEVER believed williams would stand a chance! not that i had actually watched any of her games b4.
Serena could beat Sharapova any days in a tournament. Because of her absence from the tennis world for awhile, her ranking is slightly about right for right now. If she win the Frech Open she should quickly jump into that #1 spot that Sharapova is holding. If Serena hasn’t been on TV so much and gone through those b/f stuff I seriously think she could have had 10 titles by now.
