How can Roger Federer still be considered the GOAT when he is constantly being beaten by Nadal?
All the other great players such as Sampras, Laver, and Bjorn were never DOMINATED by another player in their era. And if Federer is considered to be the greatest of all time, shouldn’t Nadal also be taken into consideration since he has a winning record over Roger?
I’m just wondering why some people keep saying Nadal isn’t as dominant when you take clay out of the equation ( why would you dismiss that as irrelevant?) that’s like saying he would be even more dominant if you would take hard courts out of the equation for Federer
lol you got me there with GOAT. I was like WTF? I have to use that sometimes. Look at what else Federer has accomplished- you cannot take this one issue he has with Nadal and take the rest away from him it makes no sense. And Nadal cannot be put in that category yet- he only has the Wimbledon and JUST one the Australian. They both need some more grand slam titles and they will most likely have to go through the other to get it
Man, I hate this. I’m a huge Fed fan, he has class, poise and intelligence.
But, you are correct, he cannot be considered the GOAT, and probably never will be considered again. The third and fifth sets were embarrassments to tennis. When asked to break in the third he became a pusher and played without heart. In the last game of the match, he quit. It’s not that he lost, it is that he didn’t display guts and determination.
The GOAT does not quit on a match.
EDIT: I can be a fan of the man’s class and value to the sport, but, at the same time recognize he quit in the 5th set. I hope he beats Nadal in the French; but, if forced to bet, all things equal (health, etc) I’d bet against Fed. I wish it was different, but, it is what it is.
yaaa ur right..mabe thay just like federer more tan nadal..
Moose,
how can you be a federer fan if you said he was an embarrasment? roger tried really hard to win and really wanted the title.
and for the question, roger should break the record to be considered. if nadal also breaks the record later, then he is the greatest. but right now, he’s too young
We really can’t make a true comparison as of yet. I mean, Roger has been around a bit longer than Nadal.
But looking only at what has happened so far with the two of them, I still say Roger is more impressive. I mean, you can’t argue with his 5 Wimbledon titles in a row. And all the other grand slam titles he’s taken with Nadal still in the mix. And he’s going to win more majors, it’s just a matter of time.
Also, even now, Nadal hasn’t been as consistent with making it to the semi’s/finals of the majors as has Federer.
Now, would I consider Federer the GOAT? Not sure. I just know that Nadal would NOT be my reasoning against it.
I’m with Moose.
I think Federer’s tennis brain quit on him today…he couldn’t figure out how to break Nadal and it drove him crazy.
His serves (double faults) reflected the broiling conflicts of his mind.
IMO, he should have a mental coach who is paid full-time. The fact that he doesn’t have full-time coaching indicates his hubris…
If he would hire and keep his coaching staff, he would equal or surpass the prize money he would have had to pay the coaches. For all his good qualities, his downfall is his monetary greed.
Dude, you are so right.
I say its by his techniques and not just over the fact of winning.
That should be taken into consideration.
Also when they play Federer gets the most recorded Winning Shots
but he also manages to get the most Unforced Errors also.
Yes Dude Nadal is much better than Federer. He is undisputed and greatest of modern tennis era. I think you had mispelled Great as Goat
Every single player of all time has some sort of weakness.
It just happens that Federer is around at the same time as someone who exposes his weaknesses
We cannot judge Federers career over the past year. Great people are judged in their prime. Federer has accomplished so much
Anyway, todays match could have gone either way. So could Wimbledon 08 have..
And if you take clay out of equation ( something Nadal was born to dominate on.. Federer has a winning record over Nadal
First of all let me say that I am a HUGE Roger Federer fan. I think he is one of the best things sports have to offer. Not only for the amount of championships he’s won in the past, but also the class he shows on and off the court. In a time where people like Terrell Owens are often on SportsCenter for reasons I don’t understand, it’s great to have someone like Roger that always knows the right things to say/do.
That being said, I don’t think Roger is the GOAT. One of the top 3-4? Definitely!! Absolutely no doubt about that. Do I think he would beat Sampras in both of their prime? I think he would own Sampras like he owns Roddick.
The problem is there is a guy named Rafa Nadal who in my opinion will go down as the #1 player I’ve ever watched wield a tennis racket. And the surprising thing is that his skills on the court are not the main reason he wins. The head on his shoulders and the people around him are the MAIN reason for his success.
The reason Sampras and Bjorn were not dominated by another player in their era is because Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer weren’t in their era. The level these two men play at is INCREDIBLE.
Just my two cents.
I think people were saying he was not a dominate player on other surfaces a couple years ago. But since then, he has improved on hard courts and grass so I think people are looking at him differently. On ESPN 2, they were comparing Rafa’s current age of what he’s won so far and Roger at 22, and Rafa has already won more singles titles and Grand Slams. He has a chance to be one of the greatest or is right now.
For now, Federer is still arguably the GOAT albeit with an asterisk. Federer has had the most dominant 4-year career in tennis, and that during that course he has separated himself completely from the rest, who are nevertheless very talented in their own rights. That asterisk of course would be Nadal, for Nadal dominates Federer and Nadal’s career, from what we are witnessing today, is geared towards at least equal achievement with what Federer has achieved so far..
So we can all see who is truly the GOAT when both of their careers are over, for surely, the real GOAT will come from one of them…
nadal has beaten federer on all 4 surfaces now.. that is awesome… that shows that nadal can beat federer just about anywhere.. if he is on his A game..
federer was considered the goat untill the later part of 2007 – 2009.. when nadal started having more wins over him.. go nadal he is awesome!
Becasuse of Federer is a MUCH BETTER player than Nadal- the spanish idiot aka Rat on steroids!
HA Ha !
no, Nadal has to work to be putting in that category, yes he is a great Talent, but roger has won 13 majors. yes when Nadal is closer to that or above that no problem.
