US Open 2010 Schedule,US Open Tournament Players details
<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>
WITH THE qualifiers already underway and a possible non-participation threat cloud looming large over Serena Williams, the U.S Open 2010 will kick start on August 30 and will continue till September 12, 2010 at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York City, United States.
Last years, defending champions were Juan Martin del Porto from Argentina in the men’s category and Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the women’s category. Although del Porto will not be defending his title this year due to a wrist injury, Clijsters is a favourite as a player who has continuously performed well at the US Open. Serena Williams, undoubtedly the best top ranked player and holder of two grand slam titles might not participate in this year’s tournament due to an injury in her right foot.
Another seeded player, who appears to be in top form is Lleyton Hewitt who is basking in his own comfort zone as a third seed post the ATP Atlanta Tennis Championship.

Tennis- Nadal wins the Capitala Exhibition Tournament
After a long losing streak, Rafael Nadal finally won a title, the first of the season. The win comes as preparation for the year’s major tournaments, beginning with the Australian Open in the second week of January, an event that will gather together the most elite tennis players. Nadal finally defeated Robin Soderling after two losses against the Swede. The match was close and difficult for both players. Although Nadal won with two straight sets, the first set had to be decided on a tie break, while the second one was close as well, ending with a score of 7-6 (3), 7-5 for the final of the season-opening Capitala exhibition tournament. The tournament semifinals were full of surprises, the largest of which involved Roger Rederer’s ouster by Soderling for the first time in 13 matches. The fans’ dreams of seeing a Nadal vs. Federer final were dashed; Soderling took Federer 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 in the semifinals in a deeply contested match. Each player held serve in the first two sets before Soderling broke the Swiss player in the third and seventh games of the third set to earn his first victory against the world No. 1. Federer had a difficult season starter against Soderling, of whom he said, “Obviously it’s hard to start playing against him, but I had fun.” Federer took the tournament as preparation for Doha and the Australian Open, aiming for the title that he missed last year to Nadal in the final. The other match in the semifinals, Nadal against David Ferrer, saw the world No. 2 win 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. The game seemed challenging to both Spaniards, who played together in the Davis Cup finals last month. In the end, however, Nadal was able to prove the return of his abilities, sealing his spot for the final. A final against Soderling must have been what Nadal had been dreaming of, since his defeat at the Swede’s hands in the last two matches. In the first set, Soderling pushed Nadal to a tiebreak that gave the Spaniard the win. The second set seemed the only hope for the Swede, who was clearly hoping to reverse the results of the first set. Soderling appeared to have a chance – until Nadal broke Soderling’s serve in the sixth game, giving the Spaniard the match. Nadal viewed the tournament, which was only an exhibition, as great preparation for both the Australian Open and the Doha tournament. He seemed determined to take the season one game at a time. “Everybody wants the No. 1 ranking, but, believe me, for me it is not my goal for this year,” the Spaniard said. “To play competitively throughout and win as many tournaments as I can, that is my goal. To be happy playing, to be healthy and to play like I have played over the last two days.” Nadal, along with Federer and Soderling, will be participating next week at the Qatar Open in Doha; then he will head to the Australian Open to defend his title and lastly to the Netherlands, in Rotterdam, before he can take a break.

Tennis : Federer and Nadal Headline Field at Rogers Cup Tennis Tournament
TORONTO – After a month-long break, the top two men’s tennis players in the world are ready to get back to business.
World No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland and No. 2 Rafael Nadal of Spain headline the 64-man field at the $2.45-million US Rogers Cup, which begins Monday at the Rexall Centre on the campus of York University.
The Masters Series event boasts 17 of the top 20 players in the world, but many fans will be hoping to witness another chapter in the rivalry between Federer and Nadal, who have owned the ATP Tour this season and are playing for the first time since meeting in the Wimbledon final.
Nadal won the Rogers Cup last year in Montreal while Federer won here in 2004. Two other former champions, Marat Safin of Russia (2000) and Thomas Johansson of Sweden (1999), are also in the field but former winners Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi were late withdrawals. Roddick, the 2003 champ, is nursing a muscle strain in his side while Agassi – a three-time champ (’92, ’94, ’95) who pulled out Friday – will concentrate on getting ready for the next Masters Series event in Cincinnati before ending his stellar career at the U.S. Open.
Federer, who turns 25 on Tuesday, is coming in on a high after beating Nadal in the final for his fourth straight Wimbledon title four weeks ago. He will open against Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, his same opponent from the first round at the All-England Club. Federer is an impressive 56-4 record this season but all four losses – including one in the French Open final – have come to Nadal, who is 43-5 on the year.
Federer said he enjoys their rivalry and thinks it’s good for the sport.
“I think it deserves the attention,” he said. “We’ve been playing so good for the last one and-a-half years. He’s been really coming along since his French Open win back in ’05. He’s been able to back it up on clay and then also he’s started to improve on hardcourt and on grass. The difference is not that big anymore.”
Nadal, 20, handed Federer his lone hardcourt loss of the season in the final at Dubai last March. However, the Spanish star could be tested early as he opens against Nicolas Massu of Chile, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
There are some other intriguing first-round matchups, which will be spread out over two days. Former French Open champions Gaston Gaudio of Argentina and Carlos Moya of Spain will square off while veteran Frenchman Fabrice Santoro will take on rising star and countryman Richard Gasquet. There’s even an all-Canadian matchup between wild-card entries Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont.
Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Philip Bester of North Vancouver, B.C., also picked up wild-card spots but both have tough draws. Nestor faces No. 13 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic while Bester will take on fifth-seeded James Blake of the U.S.
Nestor and partner Mark Knowles of the Bahamas are seeded fourth in the 24-team doubles field. The top seeds are Bob and Mike Bryan of the U.S.
The weather is expected to cooperate for the 125th anniversary of the tournament with warm temperatures and sunny skies in the long-term forecast.
Organizers had to do make some last-minute changes to the draw after Roddick’s withdrawal was announced Sunday afternoon. It was good news for Robby Ginepri, who was slated to meet No. 3 David Nalbandian of Argentina. Ginepri instead became the No. 17 seed and will play qualifier and fellow American Kevin Kim while Nalbandian will face qualifier Davide Sanguinetti of Italy. Roddick’s No. 9 seed position was not filled and lucky loser Nicolas Mahut of France was added to the draw. He’ll play Czech qualifier Jan Hernych.
Tournament director Grant Connell said he understood that Roddick wanted to take some more time to nurse the strain in his left side that also kept him out of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.
“When he cancelled his flight from Texas, I knew his injury was still an issue,” Connell said. “Andy loves the hardcourt surface and I’m certain he wishes he could play in Toronto.”
Roddick issued a statement saying he was very disappointed that he could not compete, adding he’s optimistic he’ll be back in top form for the U.S. Open.
Connell is still pleased with the depth of the field, calling it one of the strongest in tournament history. The winner of Sunday’s final will receive $400,000 while the winning doubles team will split $99,300.
Notes: Six-time champion Ivan Lendl, tennis great Roy Emerson and Robert Bedard, the last Canadian to win the tournament, will be on hand for the opening ceremonies . . . I.F. Hellmuth won the first edition of the Canadian Open at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club in 1881 . . . The women’s Rogers Cup will be played at Montreal’s Uniprix Stadium Aug. 12-20. Wimbledon 2009 Tennis Tournament – Tommy Haas
Venus Williams v Dinara Safina
Head-to-head: Williams leads 2-1; never met on grass
Last Meeting: Safina won 6/7, 6/3, 6/4 at Rome 08/05/09
Venus Williams has dropped a mere 19 games in her five matches so far and the heavy strapping around her knee didn’t look to have any adverse affect on her quarter-final. The five times champion has extended her winning streak to 19 matches at SW19, with the last 16 all been won in straight sets.
Her semi-final record here is impeccable with seven wins from seven. The last six of these victories were all achieved by at least a six game margin while the seventh was won by five games. Venus may have lost her last meeting with Safina but that was played on clay and in their previous two meetings which were both in the last 12 months and on hard courts she won by at least five games.
Since 2001 Venus has beaten the 5.5 games handicap in 37 of her 52 Wimbledon matches including 16 of 24 matches against seeded players.
Dinara Safina has only ever beaten one seed at Wimbledon and that was with the roof on against Amelie Mauresmo this year. She has lost four of her seven semi-finals in Grand Slam and Tier One tournaments excluding clay in the past three years by a margin of five or more games.
One of these defeats was a 6/2, 6/3 demolition by Serena Williams in the US Open semi last year and this was an example of how she has struggled under the extra pace the Williams sisters hit with. In total she has lost five of her eight matches against Serena by seven or more games, including all three in the last 12 months.
Safina has lost six of her last seven matches against the current top 10 players away from the clay, with five straight sets defeats and five losses by five or more games.
Recommendation: Venus Williams to win -5.5 games 2.10, Betfair
Serena Williams v Elena Dementieva
Head-to-head: All-square 5-5; Williams leads 1-0 on grass
Last Meeting: Dementieva won w/o at Paris 14/02/09
Remarkably Elena Dementieva has won five of her six meetings with Serena Williams since the start of 2006 – although her last win was a walkover. However, Serena was a convincing winner when they met in the Australian Open semi-final in January (6/3, 6/4) and has won both their career Grand Slam meetings.
Serena was at her brutal best in her quarter-final win over Victoria Azarenka and at one stage had made 19 winners to just one unforced error. Added to her current form is her outstanding record in Grand Slam semi-finals of W12-L1 with her one loss coming against Justine Henin on clay. In fact her semi-final record in Grand Slam and Tier One events away from clay since the start of 2002 is a perfect W19-L0 (W4-L3 on clay). Excluding clay she has won eight of her 11 Grand Slam semi-finals in straight sets and seven times won the first set by three or more games.
Serena has a W12-L3 record at Wimbledon against seeded players excluding her sister and has won the first set by three or more games eight times.
Elena Dementieva is yet to face a seed in this year’s Championships as she has cruised through the draw dropping no more than five games in any of her five matches. However, this lack of a competitive match could hurt her against Williams.
She has only been longer than 3.5 to win 11 times in the last three years and has lost nine times with one of her two wins coming courtesy of a retirement. Excluding the retirement she has lost the first set by three or more games in seven of the 10 matches with a further two first sets lost by two clear games.
Dementieva has coped well in a lot of her previous meeting with Serena but this may be more due to her opponents desire than anything else as she has certainly struggled against the power game when playing Venus Williams, losing the last six meetings with five first sets lost by three or more games and the other lost by two.
Dementieva’s record in Grand Slam and Tier One semi-finals is a poor one with 10 defeats in her last 12. Her Wimbledon record is not impressive either, when looking at her results against seeded players she has lost all seven times against top 20 seeds and lost the first set by four or more games in three of her four matches against top eight seeds.
Recommendation: Serena Williams to win the first set -2.0 games 2.25, William Hill
