Tennis Betting Tips ? In 2009 Yet So Far for Rafael Nadal
At the start of 2009 tennis betting tips, many thought that Rafael Nadal was set to dominate world tennis after the way he won the Australian Open, beating Roger Federer in an epic five-set final.
However, a knee injury then played its part in his shocking fourth-round defeat at the French Open, and he was not able to defend his titles at Queens and Wimbledon.
Nadal made his comeback at the Montreal Masters 1000 Event and reached the quarterfinals, where he lost to the eventual runner-up Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina.
The following week, Nadal made the semifinals of the Masters 1000 Event in Cincinnati, where he lost to the Serb Novak Djokovic.
The Spaniard then reached the semifinals of the US Open for the second time in as many years, but was blown apart by an inspired del Potro, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
To top it off, this weekend, Nadal reached the finals of the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai, but was beaten by Nikolay Davydenko, 7-6, 6-3.
Since Nadals comeback tennis betting odds , he may not have won a title, but a Masters 1000 final and semi appearance, as well as a last four showing at the US Open, prove that it has been a case of so near, yet so far for Rafa in 2009.
If Nadal can find his best form , then he could yet upset the tennis betting tips and win the Masters Cup in London next month
Hi
2010 Wimbledon tips – Rafael Nadal the value bet to win Wimbledon
Roger Federer, the world and interplanetary No. 1, is in quite a quandary, but so is Rafael Nadal. They’re locked in a fatal embrace, like two whitetail deer bucks whose horns become inextricably locked up during a breeding season battle.
With Sunday’s win at the Madrid Open Masters 1000 tournament, Nadal improved his head-to-head record against Federer to 14-7, meaning he wins two out of every three matches the men play. This is facilitated, partly, by Nadal’s talent for making hay while the sun shines during the European clay-court season (even when it’s dank and cold, like this year), and also by his understanding at most other events of that valuable old chestnut, “discretion is the better part of valor.”
Still, Nadal now stands alone as the most successful Open era player at those elite ATP World Tour Masters events. The Madrid title was his 18th, breaking Andre Agassi’s record.
Actually, Agassi and his great career rival, Pete Sampras, know a thing or two about the deadlock — or is it gridlock? — into which Federer and Nadal have fallen. Agassi will tell you that those superb stats in Masters events seem like diddly-squat compared to the record Sampras amassed in the more important Grand Slam events. Sampas won 14 majors, to eight for Agassi, entitling him to look at a tournament like Madrid or Cincinnati or Miami and scoff, “Oh, do I really have to win those little ones, too?”
Nadal’s record of 18 Masters title is most notable for the speed with which the Mallorcan Master of red dirt attained it — he’s not even 24 yet, for gosh sakes. Given his proficiency on clay, and the fact that three of the Masters are presently contested on that surface, it’s conceivable that he’ll end up with well over 25 Masters titles. It’s a marvelous record of consistency at sub-majors, but the operative compound word is “sub-major.”
Federer can go the Sampras route, line up those 16 Grand Slam singles trophies, grin and say, “I won a bunch of the small ones, too.” But unlike Sampras, he can also point to an accomplishment that gave Agassi a measure of satisfaction in his rivalry with Sampras: Like Agassi, Federer has a career Grand Slam. Neither Sampras nor Nadal (to this point) have managed that. Federer and Agassi are two of just six men who achieved that feat.
When it comes to the head-to-head records, Federer can look for sympathy from Agassi, who lost the H2H battle with Sampras, 20-14. In Grand Slam finals, Sampras is 4-1 over Agassi, while Nadal is 6-2 over Federer, whose two lone Grand Slam championship wins over Nadal happened at Wimbledon.
Given Federer’s well-earned reputation as a complete player, it’s ironic that Nadal has managed to beat Federer in major finals on three different surfaces, while Federer has beaten Nadal only on one: grass. But as any Federer loyalist will point out, it’s not exactly Federer’s fault that Nadal can’t get opposite him in the U.S. Open final. And they’ve met in just one Australian Open final (Nadal won), which isn’t what anyone would call “statistically significant.”
The most telling comparison in the rivalries, and the numbers that will be recited long after things like head-to-heads become statistical oddities, is the enormous lead Sampras and Federer hold over Agassi and Nadal, respectively, in overall Grand Slam performance.
Winning 18 Masters is an enormous accomplishment, but let’s remember that it represents exactly — and only — two titles more than Federer has bagged at Grand Slams. Nadal has landed some punishing blows against Federer and often has put him on the ropes — just as Agassi was able to do to Sampras. Nadal and Agassi are both masters of guerilla warfare, taking potshots and chipping away at superior performers, if not always superior opponents.
It must be alternately frustrating and exhilarating for great champions who are locked in a fatal embrace, and it isn’t such a bad deal for we ordinary schmoes, either.
