If it wasn’t for a second set lapse, you could make the case that Roger Federer thoroughly whipped Rafael Nadal. But the final score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in favor of Federer isn’t the main story.

Australian Open- Nadal and Del Potro continue to the third run; Henin?s return has been amazing
Wednesday was a great day for Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro, both playing in the second round of the Australian Open. Both finished with victories over their opponents, Lukas Lacko and James Blake, respectively. Rafa seemed to have control of the match from the beginning. Lacko committed 53 unforced errors; he managed to save two of three match points in the third set when the score was 5-2, but he then lost the set and so the match in three straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. “I played a serious match. I think I played the match what I need to play,” said Nadal, who is No. 2 in the World Ranking. “I was playing, moving well in the beginning without mistakes, having with the control of the ball.” Nadal will be facing Philipp Kohlschreiber for the third round of the tournament. Juan Martin del Potro, on the other hand, had a very difficult match against the American, James Blake. The match lasted more than four hours before the Argentine finally won it, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. Neither of the players was able to break serve in the first four sets. Del Potro finally had an opportunity in the fifth set at 6-5 but Blake broke him back immediately when the Argentine committed 2 unforced errors. Del Potro then demonstrated his abilities, breaking Blake when they were 9-8 to serve back again and finish the set with a big serve for his first match point. It was terrible for the American, who made an incredible effort against del Potro; Blake may have deserved a win as much as did his opponent, but in the end his mistakes cost him the match. On the women’s side, Justine Henin is making a great comeback after being off of the tennis courts for more than one year. She defeated Elena Dementieva 7-5, 7-6 (6) and moved into the third round of the Australian Open, demonstrating that she still is one of the best tennis players in the world. It was a close match for both players, but the difference came in the tiebreak, when Henin was able to win the last three points. Henin said later that the game reminded her of the match she lost against Clijsters two weeks ago in the Brisbane International Final, the first tournament in which she participated after returning from retirement. “I lived so much emotion on the court this evening. It was magical,” she said of her match against Dementieva. “I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do it, but it was the kind of situation I needed to refind my confidence.” Hennin later stated that Clijsters was the one who inspired her to comeback; Clijsters retired for three years, was married, and had a baby before she decided to return. She has demonstrated that she is still at the top level of major tennis. Hennin has no spot in the world rankings right now, but entered into the Australian Open with a wild card, just as Clijsters did in the US Open. The 27-year-old will have to face Russian No. 27 Alisa Kleybanova in the third round of the tournament.

US Open- Nadal and Federer Win and Move to Third Round
Rafael Nadal answered questions about his knees on Wednesday when he easily won his first match in the US Open. The Spaniard had left tennis for two months this summer, trying to recover from tendonitis in both of his knees; since his return, rumors and speculation have surrounded the state of his legs. His absence had caused him to drop from top seeded in rankings to 3rd seed. Although he admitted several weeks ago that he was not in the best of shape, he has since then reached the semifinals and finals in several tournaments. Now, at the US Open, he finished his first round saying, “I played well, no?” Rafa defeated Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. Gasquet had returned from a two-and-a-half month suspension himself for testing positive for cocaine. The player managed to shorten his lengthy suspension by arguing that a kiss at a nightclub had allowed the drug to infiltrate his system. Wednesday’s match was the Nadal’s first at a major tournament since the French Open, where he was upset by Robin Soderling in the fourth round. Nadal thereafter decided not to defend his title at Wimbledon, pleading a need for rest to let his injuries heal. He expressed surprise at the speculation that surrounded his injuries; people, he said, acted as if he had been absent for two years. “It was two months,” he said. He added that, for the first time at the US Open, he felt fresh and was hoping to win his first US title. “I am very happy to be here another time, and I am enjoying much more practicing with a better attitude than when I was playing in clay season with pain in the knees every day. I went on court without pressure,” he said. “Just thinking I feel I’m a very lucky guy to be here playing and enjoying this sport.” The next match for Rafa will be in the second round against the German Nicolas Kiefer. Roger Federer, the Swiss player who rose to no. 1 in the world during Nadal’s absence, had a great night on Wednesday after defeating the German player Simon Gruel 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. In a close match, Federer again demonstrated the skills that earn him the top spot in male tennis. Although he won the first set with no major difficulties, Federer began to struggle in the second, as Gruel upped the ante. Federer fell behind 4-1 but managed a resurgence at the end of the match, winning 7-5. Federer, who is looking for his sixth US Open title in a row, stated after the match that he had seen Gruel playing before and that the German player did a great job and brought a difficult battle. The match was full of intensity, Federer said, and Gruel proved his skills as a player. Federer’s next rival will be Lleyton Hewitt, who won the US Open in 2001. Hewitt defeated Juan Ignacio Chela from Argentina in the second round. Federer has won 13 matches against Hewitt, but still approaches his opponent warily.

Davis Cup – Spain Captures Their Third Title at Mar Del Plata
The Spanish team defeated in an amazing way the host team Argentina at the Davis Cup and captured their third title in a decade. Fernando Verdasco won the tournament final on Sunday when he beat in 3 hours and 56 minutes the Argentinean Jose Acasuso in five sets 6-3, 6-7(3), 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, giving Spain a 3-1 lead and the title of the Davis Cup.
This was the first lost of Argentina in 10 years at home in Davis Cup games; however, this was also their first final at home and therefore, the team had great expectations of winning their first David Cup title this time since they were the favorites after the Spanish Rafael Nadal got injured before the final.
For its part, Spain won their first title on the road, after having won in 2000 and 2004 against Australia and U.S respectively at home.
Verdasco replaced David Ferrer due to injury and the 48th ranked Acasuso replaced the No.9 of the world Juan Martín Del Potro due to a pull muscle injury he suffered on Friday’s match against Lopez.
The game was held in the indoor Islas Malvinas Arena at Mar del Plata in front of more than 11,000 fans. At the beginning of the game, Acasuso started a little nervous by loosing his serve in the fifth game of the first set and making three unforced errors consecutively. But after losing the first set, Acasuso began the second set with more confidence breaking the serve of his opponent in the second game, Verdasco for his part made two double-faults afterwards. During the second and third set Acasuso was playing great tennis and Verdasco was losing his focus but not his confidence. In the fourth and fifth set Verdasco came back consistently leveling the set and having brilliant shots. Moreover, Acasuso became tired and discouraged so Verdasco took advantage of that and wrapped up the match winning the fifth set 6-1.
Verdasco, who was ecstatic after the game, expressed that “It’s the most exciting victory of my life. It’s like a dream come true and it’s a great day for all the people in Spain”. He also added that “In the Davis Cup, you have to fight to the death and you always have to keep your hope of winning. This mental strength helped me win the match.”
This was an historic victory for Verdasco and his team, not only by capturing the title but also reaching another incredible win in sports this year for Spain. Definitely this year was incredible for Spain; Nadal was amazing on his tennis season by taking the No.1 spot in the ATP and winning Wimbledon and the French Open. On the other hand; the Spanish Soccer team won the EURO 2008, the Spain’s delegation captured 18 medals at the Olympics (the best in their history), in cycling, Alberto Contador won the Giro d’ Italia and the Spanish Vuelta and Carlos Sastre won the Tour of France, and finally the Spaniard Fernando Alonso won two races at the end of this year’s Formula 1 championship, which gives hope of a new title for next year.
As everybody can see, all this accomplishments prove that Spain is getting stronger in several sports, and that their tennis is also getting bigger. Even without the No.1 Nadal, the team achieved the title, which demonstrates that Spain has more talented tennis players that could get to the top in the ATP in the future.

Novak Djokovic had a difficult match against the Swiss Marco Chiudinelli; the match was taken to four sets, with the Serb committing 9 double-faults and 52 unforced errors before he was finally able to take victory 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3. Djokovic said after the match that he was impressed by Chiudinelli’s skill against him. It was the Swiss player’s first Australian Open. “I was well aware of his quality, and he played extremely well, especially in the first set and the start of the second,” Djokovic said. “I was very lucky to get two sets to one up.” The win was also an especially sweet one. Said Djokovic: “This court is most special because I won my only Grand Slam here.” Djokovic won his first Grand Slam title in the 2008 Australian Open, defeating Roger Federer in the semifinals and winning the title at the end. His preparation for this year’s tournament has been very intense indeed. Roger Federer, world No. 1, also defeated his opponent, Victor Hanescu from Romania, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 , in a match that didn’t seem a challenge for the top player. He was able to break Hanescu’s serve several times and took advantage of the Romanian’s errors to win in straight sets, in a match very different from the one he had on Tuesday against Andreev. At the end of the match Roger discovered that Prince William of England had attended the match, sitting in the VIP area. “Your Royal Highness, welcome to the world of tennis. Thanks for coming,” Federer said. The last time that Federer played in the Rod Laver Arena was last year in the final, when he left with tears in his eyes after being defeated by Rafael Nadal. Roger has won the Australian Open on three occasions and has a 49-7 record at Melbourne Park. For the female tennis stars, the Williams sisters advanced to the third round. Both won their respective matches: Serena, who is the defending champion of the tournament, beat Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-1; Venus defeated the Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-2, 7-5. Venus first played on a very warm day at Melbourne; she played for an hour and a half against a left-hander, the second she has faced in the tournament. She said she was unused to playing against a left-hander, but welcomed – and rose to – the challenge. Serena played her second match of the tournament and finished in less than an hour. She appeared to be in very good shape and complete 4 of 11 break point chances. She has been winning every odd-numbered year since 2003, when she beat her sister Venus in the finals; since then, Venus hasn’t been able to advance from the fourth round to take the Australian Open. Venus has, however, won seven Grand Slam titles in her career. This year there is no chance of seeing a Williams final, although the sisters, in the same group, will have to face each other before then if both continue forward. The showdown may occur in the quarterfinals, after which only the best continue for the title.

Australian Open – Williams’ and Federer Sail Into the Third Round
Serena defeated China’s Meng Yuan 6-3, 6-2 whereas her sibling beat Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 6-3.
One expected Dementieva to have played with great skill and confidence as she had just come from the Sydney International where she triumphed over Serena in a thrilling game. She had to fight off her opponent for 2 hours before she could finally proclaim victory over Germany’s Kristina Barrois.
Dementieva spoke of her fear of losing the match and giving up her dream of winning the Australian Open in the first round but she managed a 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-1 win over Barrois in Melbourne Park.
Despite having won titles in Auckland and Sydney leading to the Australian Open she found herself unable to thwart off her relatively unknown rival. Borrois played with an aggression that seemed to daze the in-form Russian. This was the same venue where, 2 years back in 2006, she was ousted from the tournament in only the first round and she feared the same might happen again against Borrois, who has yet to gain a seeding.
Serena and Venus faced no such troubles as they breezed into the next round of the Australian Open. There is great hope amidst fans that the 2 titans may clash against each other in the semi-finals. Winning here for Serena would mean a 10th major win for her and her 4th in Melbourne. She had won here previously in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
Giving up her usual flashy tennis clothing in favor for a more sober dark blue one, Serena defeated her Chinese rival in just 75 minutes. Elder sister Venus was unimpressed by her opponent, Kerber. The American has yet to win the Australian Open tournament.
Latest tennis results on the Men’s side showed second seed Roger Federer had an easy time defeating Evgeny Korolev who is seeded 118. He beat Koroley 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Federer has grown closer to equaling Pete Sampras’ record of single’s Grand Slam titles. Back to back aces in the first game were indication enough of the great form Federer is in. He is meeting Marat Safin on Wednesday. This is a game to watch out for as Safin had defeated Federer in the semi-finals here in 2005 on his way to winning the title. With this win Australian Open tennis results just got more exciting.
Novak Djokovic defeated Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 6-1, 6-3, No. 11 David Ferrer of Spain beat a 31-year-old qualifier Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.
I strongly recommend you don’t miss Australian Open tennis results as it’s going to be every bit as thrilling as this match.
