What is the reason that people should protest over Sania Mirza’s marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik?

—- and call for her to return her national awards.

“In 2006, Mirza was awarded a Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest honor for her achievements as a tennis player.

She represented India at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, in the women’s singles and doubles events. ”

http://im.rediff.com/sports/2006/jan/25sania.htm

Are those awards a recognition of her proficiency in tennis or was it given as a form of charity? It seems that she has done her country proud as a tennis star. Does she deserve these acrimonious comments and intrusion in her personal life in return?

http://sify.com/news/regional-political-party-protests-against-sania-mirza-s-marriage-with-shoaib-malik-news-national-kd5rudcigcb.html

I was amazed to read some of the replies given by certain Indians here. The only issue these people have is that Shoib is from Pakistan and that she practices the muslim faith. I’m sure these comments must hurt the good and nationalistic Indian muslim people very deeply as I had earlier witnessed in OurMehfil (our forum).

For some people one should not expect much..but some others..very surprising!!

What do others feel about it? Your thoughts ?

And, friends, Good Friday to you all.

Thanks

Rehman of Multan

Do you think Venus & Serena Williams should get more respect?

I am a huge tennis fan, and the recent resurgence of serena williams has been egg on the face for a lot of her old critics. While she is obviously doing well right now, I was surprised by just how dominating she has been over her career.
Right now her career win-loss ratio is 83.1%. To put that in perspective, among the active players on the women’s tour:
Sharapova is 80.6%
Justine Henin is 80.9%
Hingis is 80.99%
Clijsters is 80.6%
The active player closest to Williams in career match dominance is none other than her sister, Venus at 81.0%. It’s not just in singles either. These two women are the closest active players on either tour to win the boxed-set (all twelve grand slams in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.) Given such accomplishments do you think that if any active player deserves some credit and leeway, it’s the Williams sisters?

Should James Blake retire this year?

I know some of you (such as Jay) are pissed about reading this question, so for the record I actually am a James Blake fan. He was actually my 1st favourite player (then Djokovic, and now it’s Baghdatis)

His ranking has dropped to 115. His record this year is a measly 8-9 and he hasn’t even made it to the finals of a tournament. He was embarrased at Wimbledon, losing to Robin Haase in straights the first round, and he also had a spat with Pam Shriver.

To further strengthen my point, I just recently read Inside Tennis magazine. Included in that issue was an article about James Blake titled: “At a Crossroads”. It is identified that he does have/had a knee injury, and it seems pretty serious. He says he retweaked his knee in Eastbourne against Julien Benneteau. Blake has also refused to take surgery, painkillers, or anti-inflammatories. Yes, I am well aware of the fact that he has battled a major back problem, shingles, and a broken neck (or was it a vertebrate?). However, he added:

“If it doesn’t get better soon, I’m not sure how much longer I want to play in pain.”

I hate to be the breaker of bad news but I personally think that he needs to retire from tennis. My suggestion for James Blake: retire at the 2010 US Open.
I also read James Blake’s autobiography by the way. So i know what he’s been through haha
@David — You were right XD

Do you think that Roger Federer should forget about the French Open, and rest during that period and just?

prepare for Wimbledon every year for now on? Maybe he is pressing himself too much to win that event. Rafa is only 22 and owns the French Open, he is a 4 time winner, and will probably win it serveral more times. Also, Roger should hire a coach. If I were Federer, I would give the French Open 1 or 2 more chances, if he doesn’t win it by 2010, he probably will never win it. He’ll turn 30 in 2011, and he isn’t going to win it after age 30. His window is closing very quickly there. Maybe he should just concentrate on Aus Open, Wimb and US Open. Many of the greats used to skip the French. It’s too hard to win. I know he wants all 4 majors, but at some point, you have to admit to yourself that it won’t be done, you agree?

Why is it that some people count Federer out and say he should retire and he’s not gonna win ever again?

What is this? Because he won “only” 1 Grand slam this year? Since when has winning a Grand slam meant that this person should retire? Just imagine Andy Roddick, if he had won one of the Grand slams this year, would you say “he’s a loser, he should retire already”. No, you would think he’s doing great. So, why Fed gets different treatment? Because he doesn’t win 3 GS/year anymore? Yeah, he’s past his prime. But he’s not out yet, come on. He won Australian open and made it to the QF’s in French O. and Wimbledon. And into the semis in US Open. And didn’t he win in Cincinnati?

And remember 2008? When he “only” won 1 GS(US open)? A lot of people were saying the same as now, but what happened next year, 2009? He made it into the final in every Grand Slam! 2 of which he won, French open and Wimby. And now Australian open this year. That’s 6 times in a row in the final (US open 2008-Australian open 2010). Just after people were counting him out…

So, how about we’ll wait a year, and if he’s still a 16-time GS winner, THEN we could start thinking he’s retirement. But so far, he hasn’t had a no-GS-win year yet. 8 years straight with winning at least 1 Grand slam/year. Which is an all time record shared with Sampras and Borg.

What should Rafael Nadal do to revitalize his tennis game?

Uncle Toni has done a fine job, but Rafael needs to take his game to another level if he wants to consisitently challenge for tournament trophies on grass or hard courts. Maybe he should work with another coach, in addition to Toni. Who could help his game?

Do you think Maria Sharapova should change her coaching staff?

I mean, she could do with a new dimension to her game. Look at her match against Dinara Safina where she snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Maybe someone like Brad Gilbert would teach her to think on court. No disrespect to Michael Joyce but if she is to take her game up a level, he’s not the man to do it,

6 Reasons Why Your Child Should Play Tennis

There isn’t really a set age for introducing tennis to kids. By playing tennis earlier, kids have a better chance of becoming interested in it, and its benefits go way beyond the simple fact of helping your child to stay fit or exercise regularly. And we must say, tennis is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association.

Here are six reasons if you are a mom, why you should sign up your child for tennis lessons.

1. Tennis as a competitive sport, teaches children how to handle pressure, stay focus and achieve goals.
2. Tennis can also boost your child self-confidence, self-esteem and might even help him/her feel better after sweating out a bit on the tennis court.
3. Hitting a target, scoring a point, on a tennis court can help your child build a strong, flexible body and a mindset of a winner that will benefit him/her later in life.
4. Tennis is also a good sport for unfit kids struggling with obesity, high blood pressure & cholesterol. By moving constantly your child will burn calories which will help him/her lose weight, maintain a lower level of cholesterol and stay fit.
5. Tennis as a physical activity helps kids sleep better and they are often well equipped to handle emotional & physical challenges in and out of the classroom.
6. Tennis is not just for rich folks. The #1 female Tennis player in the world is Serena Williams and the world needs more of Serena Williams champions.

Should Rafael Nadal’s sponsors have him wear more traditional tennis attire?

I don’t want to slam Nadal, because I think he’s a great guy with excellent sportsmanship. That said, his sponsors make him wear some pretty tacky clothing. Even though the sleaveless shirts accentuate his muscular physique, don’t they also make him look a little unsophisticated? Plus, can’t they give him some pants (or underwear) that don’t give him a wedgie? I certainly don’t want to play tennis in those kind of shorts/pants.
