Rogers Cup – Roddick Prepares for the Quarter Finals

Andy Roddick has an obstacle before him prior to the US Open: the Rogers Cup, held in Montreal, where he will have to face the Spaniard Fernando Verdasco for a position in the quarterfinals of the tournament. He already defeated Igor Andreev on Wednesday in straight sets; he will then face the veteran Verdasco in the third round of the tournament. Roddick has been preparing himself to win another major tournament, and last week he participated in the Legg Mason Classic in Washington DC. He entered the final, where he lost against Juan Martin del Potro in a tiebreaker 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6). His performance was strong, and he said that he felt he would be in good shape for the US Open, which is held in late August in New York. The top American player has been showing a very solid game in his last two tournaments. He is by far the best player on winning games in a tiebreaker, although ironically, despite a 28-8 record, he has lost his last two finals on a tie break. His most important – and most touted – loss came during the summer classic, the Wimbledon, where Roddick played against world number 1 Roger Federer. Roddick lost 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 16-14. After that difficult game, Roddick seemed to face a turning point in his career. “There’s two options: You lay down or you keep going. The second option sounded better to me,” Roddick said after the infamous match. [R1] His choice has taken hard work and intense training, but the effort has been paying off. Roddick played very well last week, giving a performance that Larry Stefanki, Roddick’s new coach, appreciates. Stefanki has been in charge of Roddick’s comeback, and has focused on bringing solidity to the world number 5’s game. Stefanki has been working with Roddick since the Wimbledon fiasco; the coach said that he was very impressed with his player’s attitude towards the upcoming events. The trauma at Wimbledon may be key for Roddick to continue his efforts for another Grand Slam title. Roddick has maintained a strict routine for preparation; he even lost 15 pounds during the off season in order to increase his speed and mobility on the court. “The things that allow me to play well in those matches are things that started in December, not at Wimbledon,” Roddick said. “It’s about preparation; it’s about getting through matches. I think during my career I’ve been portrayed as every single type of person: good, bad, ugly, rude, nice. I think people maybe realized it’s not easy and it does take work.” Roddick is now ranked behind Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Novak Djokovic. But something important has changed; he is no longer little brother to the greats. Roddick has proved that he is competition, that the Big Four suddenly have a competitor to watch out for.

Tennis : Federer and Nadal Headline Field at Rogers Cup Tennis Tournament

TORONTO – After a month-long break, the top two men’s tennis players in the world are ready to get back to business.

World No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland and No. 2 Rafael Nadal of Spain headline the 64-man field at the $2.45-million US Rogers Cup, which begins Monday at the Rexall Centre on the campus of York University.

The Masters Series event boasts 17 of the top 20 players in the world, but many fans will be hoping to witness another chapter in the rivalry between Federer and Nadal, who have owned the ATP Tour this season and are playing for the first time since meeting in the Wimbledon final.

Nadal won the Rogers Cup last year in Montreal while Federer won here in 2004. Two other former champions, Marat Safin of Russia (2000) and Thomas Johansson of Sweden (1999), are also in the field but former winners Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi were late withdrawals. Roddick, the 2003 champ, is nursing a muscle strain in his side while Agassi – a three-time champ (’92, ’94, ’95) who pulled out Friday – will concentrate on getting ready for the next Masters Series event in Cincinnati before ending his stellar career at the U.S. Open.

Federer, who turns 25 on Tuesday, is coming in on a high after beating Nadal in the final for his fourth straight Wimbledon title four weeks ago. He will open against Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, his same opponent from the first round at the All-England Club. Federer is an impressive 56-4 record this season but all four losses – including one in the French Open final – have come to Nadal, who is 43-5 on the year.

Federer said he enjoys their rivalry and thinks it’s good for the sport.

“I think it deserves the attention,” he said. “We’ve been playing so good for the last one and-a-half years. He’s been really coming along since his French Open win back in ’05. He’s been able to back it up on clay and then also he’s started to improve on hardcourt and on grass. The difference is not that big anymore.”

Nadal, 20, handed Federer his lone hardcourt loss of the season in the final at Dubai last March. However, the Spanish star could be tested early as he opens against Nicolas Massu of Chile, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

There are some other intriguing first-round matchups, which will be spread out over two days. Former French Open champions Gaston Gaudio of Argentina and Carlos Moya of Spain will square off while veteran Frenchman Fabrice Santoro will take on rising star and countryman Richard Gasquet. There’s even an all-Canadian matchup between wild-card entries Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont.

Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Philip Bester of North Vancouver, B.C., also picked up wild-card spots but both have tough draws. Nestor faces No. 13 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic while Bester will take on fifth-seeded James Blake of the U.S.

Nestor and partner Mark Knowles of the Bahamas are seeded fourth in the 24-team doubles field. The top seeds are Bob and Mike Bryan of the U.S.

The weather is expected to cooperate for the 125th anniversary of the tournament with warm temperatures and sunny skies in the long-term forecast.

Organizers had to do make some last-minute changes to the draw after Roddick’s withdrawal was announced Sunday afternoon. It was good news for Robby Ginepri, who was slated to meet No. 3 David Nalbandian of Argentina. Ginepri instead became the No. 17 seed and will play qualifier and fellow American Kevin Kim while Nalbandian will face qualifier Davide Sanguinetti of Italy. Roddick’s No. 9 seed position was not filled and lucky loser Nicolas Mahut of France was added to the draw. He’ll play Czech qualifier Jan Hernych.

Tournament director Grant Connell said he understood that Roddick wanted to take some more time to nurse the strain in his left side that also kept him out of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.

“When he cancelled his flight from Texas, I knew his injury was still an issue,” Connell said. “Andy loves the hardcourt surface and I’m certain he wishes he could play in Toronto.”

Roddick issued a statement saying he was very disappointed that he could not compete, adding he’s optimistic he’ll be back in top form for the U.S. Open.

Connell is still pleased with the depth of the field, calling it one of the strongest in tournament history. The winner of Sunday’s final will receive $400,000 while the winning doubles team will split $99,300.

Notes: Six-time champion Ivan Lendl, tennis great Roy Emerson and Robert Bedard, the last Canadian to win the tournament, will be on hand for the opening ceremonies . . . I.F. Hellmuth won the first edition of the Canadian Open at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club in 1881 . . . The women’s Rogers Cup will be played at Montreal’s Uniprix Stadium Aug. 12-20. Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the tournament last year.

ATP Tennis- Andy Murray Wins Rogers Cup after Beating del Potro

After defeating Jo-Wildried Tsonga in the Rogers Cup semifinals on Saturday, the Scottish Andy Murray faced Juan Martin del Potro in the final. Both players had a strong game but in the end the Scot defeated the Argentine 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. The title was the fifth for Murray, who, with 50 wins, is having a great year. The victory also moved him up to No. 2 in world rankings, surpassing Rafael Nadal. With his fifth tournament win of the year, Murray has improved his record to 11-4 against the top ten players this season. During the first set, neither of the players could break the other’s serve, taking the set to a tiebreaker. Del Potro was better and stronger off the ground than Murray, who, even after two aces, couldn’t take the tiebreak and lost 6-7. As the match continued, however, the incessant heat wore away at both players, especially the Argentine, who looked exhausted by the second and third sets. It was in the second set that Murray began breaking del Potro’s serves; the Argentine, however, returned the favor during the second game, and the set went to a second tiebreak. This time, del Potro seemed overheated and tired, calling his trainer to check a painful shoulder. In the end, Murray won the tiebreak 7-3, tying the match with one set apiece. During the third set, the heat finally overtook del Potro. He seemed about to retire, but ultimately battled to the end, even though he lost his serve several times. Murray broke del Potro’s serve easily and at the same time improved his own serve. After only 25 minutes – the first two sets had required 2 hours and 17 minutes – Murray won the third set, finishing 6-1 and obtaining his 5th title of the year. At a press conference after the match, del Potro said that the mixture of playing nine difficult matches in 13 days, a shoulder injury, and the heat was too much for him. On the other hand, the Scotsman expressed his happiness at getting into the No.2 spot and winning his 5th title of the year. “I love winning tournaments. It’s great. In terms of rankings it is the biggest step I’ve made so far. I played consistently well this year, so bar winning a (Grand) Slam, I’ve done enough to justify being No. 2, and getting closer to hopefully one day becoming No. 1 is one of my goals. I’ve put in a lot of hard work to get to this stage, and I keep working hard to go one step farther,” Murray said. With this title, Murray is confident that he will do well in Cincinnati, where he will prepare for the US Open on August 31st.

WTA Tennis- Dementieva Defeated Sharapova to Win her First Title at Rogers Cup

After struggling against her Russian compatriot, world no.4 Elena Dementieva won her first title at the Rogers Cup by beating Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 in the final at Montreal, Canada on Sunday. This triumph is only the third for Dementieva over Sharapova in 11 meetings and the third title in 2009. Dementieva has become a dangerous player over the years as her fitness and her serve have improved. Maria Sharapov, on the other hand, has recovered well from her shoulder surgery but has had trouble with what had been her strongest weapon – her serve – during the past two months. During the first set, both players began with a surplus of broken serves, double faults and unforced errors. However, Dementieva was more determined to win the set, fighting for every point and winning the first eight points, including three of Sharapova’s double faults, putting the score 4-1. But Sharapova then saved three break points in the next game and held her serve to close the score 4-3 when Dementieva double faulted. After that, both Russians traded breaks until Dementieva finally ended the set by converting her third set point when Sharapova hit the ball into the net, ending with a victory of 6-4 in the first set. In the second set, both players held serve until the sixth game when Sharapova battled and won two break points. But then Sharapova converted another mistake and hit her shot onto the net to give Dementieva a 4-2 lead. With Sharapova’s mistakes, Dementiva retained her serve throughout the last games and eventually attained, with great effort, the second set 6-3 and her 14th career WTA Tour title. At the end of the game, the Sharapova said that despite her loss, she thought the final was great preparation for the US Open. She had hoped to improve her serve as she has struggled with it since her return after her shoulder injury. “No, it’s coming back from something that’s a pretty serious injury with the shoulder, and when you use it so much and all your groundstrokes and your serve, and you know, my serve is, you know, one of my biggest weapons in the game, and then coming off the injury and kind of tweaking your motion a little bit, it takes a lot of time for adjustments when you do something, you know, for your whole career since you were young and you’re used to doing it a certain way, when all of a sudden you have to change it at a very elite level,” Sharapova said. On the other hand, Elena Dementieva was extremely excited about her accomplishment and her improved playing although she admitted she did not have top form during the final. This title is her first in the Roger Cup, a win that gave her confidence for what’s coming at the U.S Open. “It’s great to have so many good matches against so many top-10 players here. I hope it’s going to be good preparation. For sure, this kind of win gives you a lot of confidence, so right now it’s all about recovering and getting ready for New York. I just feel so happy to finally win this title. It means a lot to me,” said the world no. 4.
