Roger Federer vs. Robin Soderling — End of the Streak (French Open 2010)

For the second consecutive year, Robin Soderling stepped onto Philippe Chatrier court ready to rock the tennis world and rewrite the history books. 367 days after stopping Rafael Nadal’s 31-match winning streak at Roland Garros and inflicting the Majorcan’s first and indeed only defeat to date on the Paris clay, Rockin’ Robin took his best shot at Roger Federer — and knocked the champion clean off his feet. And after two-and-a-half hours of play, the Swede had brought an end to a record which may never be broken. Since losing to Gustavo Kuerten here in the third round in 2004, Federer had gone on to reach 23 consecutive Grand Slam semi-finals. And then along came Rockin’ Robin…

The Robin Hood Movie (2010)

The Robin Hood Movie (2010) – Though Mother Nature has not been kind to the 63rd Cannes Film Festival where gloominess and rain have overtaken the sunny City of Cannes, still it could not impede the festival’s opening movie Robin Hood to be launched into stardom where Robin Hood will not just overcome King John’s forces but also the ash clouds, unnatural waves, Greece’s financial breakdown and festival scandals and boycotts.

Â

The festival was itself well and truly on the go where stars still glow dashingly in the red carpet just like the cast of Robin Hood, hot cars nuzzle each other, aircrafts passing by and beautiful ladies seen in their best outfit. The people that are here don’t have the eyes, they have Ray Bans. Cannes Film Festival is as always splendid and enthralling for both the stars and common people that cherish its real essence. And Sir Riddley Scott and Russel Crowe’s epic Robin Hood with its high profiled stars, big production values and cast performances somehow never fail to help uplift the festival’s essence. Sir Scott’s epic was shown to be marvelously shot and splendidly edited where the movie score was great.

Robin Hood is maybe diverted from its original plot where in the world premiere of the movie shows Robin Hood that rarely smiles, Maid Marian storming with chains when fighting, and brandishing a new baldhead villain who conspires with the French to take the English land who plunders the wealth of the people in the name of the English King – it never fails to show the real essence of Robin Hood which is a defender of justice and freedom.

Does Robin Hood need a sequel? Yes, the movie lends itself a sequel that will eventually make Robin Lonstride to become the famous outlaw Robin Hood that will make the story of a defender of freedom and rob riches to give it to the poor that inspires generations.

Robin Hood’s Cannes Film Festival Opening maybe an ideal opening shot much like last year’s Cannes Film Festival opening animated 3D movie Up by Disney. It’s a good movie afterall, Sir Scott.

Tuesday’s French Open Betting : Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling Live Odds

Tuesday’s French Open Betting : Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling Live Odds

Tuesday sees the tenth day’s action at Roland Garros and we’re down to the final eight in both the Men’s and Women’s draws. Who will make the Semi Finals? BetRepublic.com previews all of the day’s matches here.

Men’s Tournament:

The two Men’s Quarter Final matches being played today see top seed Roger Federer take on fifth seed Robin Soderling in the first match and fifteenth seed Tomas Berdych faces eleventh seed Mikhail Youzhny in match two. Who will progress to the final four?

Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling Tennis Betting Odds:

This match will be the thirteenth meeting between these two players and Federer, the world number one, is currently undefeated in their previous twelve encounters. Of those twelve matches, three have been played on clay and Federer has won all three in straight sets, including last year’s French Open final. Can Soderling record his first win against the Swiss legend this time around?

Federer a massive favourite to win the match at odds of 2/9 with Soderling available at 3/1. Federer has also won all four matches at Roland Garros this year in straight sets, with only Alejandra Falla of Columbia coming close to winning a set in Federer’s first three matches. Federer defeated twentieth seed Stanislas Wawrinka in round four and he pushed Federer to his second tie breaker of the tournament before ultimately losing in straight sets also. Will Federer claim another straight sets win and take another step towards defending his title?

The world number seven and fifth seed Soderling has dropped just one set on his way to the Quarter Finals, and that came in round three against twenty-ninth seed Albert Montanes. In his two matches before that he had dropped just seven games in his six sets. He defeated Montanes 3-1 in the third round before disposing of tenth seed Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 to book his place in the last eight against an opponent he has never beaten. Can he change that statistic today?

Were Soderling to face anyone else in this tournament, including Rafael Nadal, I would not hesitate to back him to progress to the last four stage with the form that he has shown in the last week.

However, Federer seems to be one step, if not two steps, ahead of the Swede in every match they have played and I feel that he will progress to the Semi Finals. Soderling will prove to be Federer’s toughest opponent so far and I feel he will take one set from Federer, so back Federer to win the match 3-1 @ 5/2

Tomas Berdych vs Mikhail Youzhny Tennis Betting Tips :

After defeating Andy Murray in round four, world number seventeen, Tomas Berdych the favourite to progress to the final four at odds of 8/15 compared to 6/4 for eleventh seed and world number fourteen Mikhail Youzhny. This will be the eleventh meeting of the two players, with Youzhny leading 6-4, can Berdych justify his favourite status and move into the last four?

Berdych has won all of his previous four matches in this year’s competition in straight sets, however he dropped ten games in both of his first two matches before warming to clay against seventeenth seed John Isner in round three with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 victory. Following that impressive performance he defeated fourth seed Murray 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 to book his place in the last eight.

Youzhny began his tournament well with a 6-1, 6-0, 6-4 victory over Michal Przysiezny in the first round, but he managed to drop a set in each of his following matches against Lukas Lacko and Viktor Troicki in the second and third rounds before progressing to the Quarter Finals when eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired from their fourth round match. Clearly Berdych has been in the better form in recent matches, but does that mean he can progress against this well known foe?

Of their ten previous encounters, just two have been played on clay and the scoreline for this surface is 1-1, with Berdych winning their last encounter in the final of the Munich Open in 2009. They played four matches in 2009, with the year ending two wins each, but have not played in 2010 and both players will be desperate to win and progress to the final four section of the tournament. With his recent form I feel that it will be Tomas Berdych who progresses, but he has only defeated Youzhny in straight sets once so I am splitting my stakes on Berdych to win 3-1 @ 11/4 and 3-2 @ 5/1.

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

Back Roger Federer to beat Robin Soderling 3-1 @ 5/2

Split your stakes on Tomas Berdych to beat Mikhail Youzhny 3-1 @ 11/4 and 3-2 @ 5/1

Women’s Tournament:

The two women’s Quarter Final matches on Day Ten see seventeenth seed Francesca Schiavone take on third seed Caroline Wozniacki and fifth seed Elena Dementieva face nineteenth seed Nadia Petrova. Who will book their Semi Final places?

Francesca Schiavone vs Caroline Wozniacki:

Caroline Wozniacki, the world number three, the favourite to progress to the Semi Final stage of the tournament at odds of 4/7 ahead of world number seventeen Schiavone at odds of 5/4 despite Schiavone having won their only previous encounter. Will Wozniacki level the scorecard and progress to the final four stage?

Wozniacki has played well so far at Roland Garros and she dispatched her first three opponents barely breaking a sweat.

First up was Alla Kudryavtseva, who was sent packing 6-0, 6-3, followed by Tathiana Garbin, who was beaten 6-3, 6-1, and finally thirty-first seed Alexandra Dulgheru, who lost 6-3, 6-4. However, the Danish 19 year old came up against fourteenth seed Flavia Pennetta in round four and she proved to be more of a challenge and caused Wozniacki to drop her first set. The third seed booked her place in the Quarter Finals with a hard fought 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 victory. This year is already her best performance in the French Open, having never progressed further than round three before, now can she get to the final four?

Bar a slow start in which she lost the first set of her first match, Francesca Schiavone has performed impeccably so far. In that first round game she lost the first set 7-5 to Regina Kulikova before winning the next two sets 6-3, 6-4 to progress to round two and she has not looked back since.

She dropped just four games in her defeat of Sophie Ferguson in round two before beating eleventh seed Na Li 6-4, 6-2 to book her fourth round spot. In round four she defeated thirtieth seed Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-4 to find herself in the last eight of the French Open. Can the Italian keep her excellent performances coming and progress to the Semi Finals?

Despite being ranked third in the world Wozniacki’s performances can be hit and miss on clay and while she has performed well so far this may be the end of the line if Schiavone can continue to play the way she has played in the last week. Also, Schiavone knows how to beat her, having defeated the Dane in Zurich in 2008. Wozniacki has made vast improvements since then and she will not be easily defeated, but I feel that she will lose this one. My money is on Francesca Schiavone to win the match at odds of 6/4.

Elena Dementieva v Nadia Petrova Tennis Betting System:

This match sees the fifth seed, in Dementieva, take on Petrova, the nineteenth seed, who caused a massive shock in the fourth round by eliminating second seed Venus Williams from proceedings. Despite this shock result, Dementieva the favourite to win the match at odds of 8/13 compared to 6/5 for Petrova. Who will progress to the Semi Final stage?

Of the two players, the fifth seed has had an easier route to the Quarter Finals by a long way, but has made it seem more difficult than her opponent. Dementieva, from Russia, dropped just two games in her first round thumping of Petra Martic before beating Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2, 7-6 in round two. On reaching the third round she came from behind to beat Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak before cruising past Chanelle Scheepers to book her spot in the last eight.

In contrast Petrova dropped just six games in her first and second round matches against Shuai Zhang and Agnes Szavay before coming from behind to beat home favourite and fifteenth seed Aravane Rezai in an epic match. Rezai won the first set 7-6 and Petrova won the second and third sets 6-4, 10-8 in a match that lasted just under three hours. In round four she powered past Venus Williams 6-3, 6-4 in ninety minutes to book a Quarter Final spot against Dementieva, whom she has faced on fourteen previous occasions.

The scorecard currently reads 7-7 after their previous fourteen encounters that go back as far as 1997. Dementieva has won the last four matches that they have played, however they have not played since the Tour Championships in 2008. Petrova will be highly confident after beating Venus Williams in the last round and, although she has been eliminated at the Quarter Final stage of all three previous clay court tournaments she has entered in 2010, I feel that she will be victorious in this match.

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

Back Francesca Schiavone to beat Caroline Wozniacki @ 6/4

Back Nadia Petrov to beat Elena Dementieva @ 6/5

Tennis: Robin Soderling stuns Roger Federer at French Open

A year after knocking Rafael Nadal out of the tournament, Soderling upsets the defending champion and world No. 1 player. Federer’s streak of reaching at least the semifinals of a major ends at 23.

Roger Federer was pumping his fists after hitting winning volleys in the first set of his quarterfinal match against Robin Soderling Tuesday at the French Open. Federer was dancing on the tips of his toes, slip-sliding through the red clay so smoothly his socks weren’t even getting dirty.

This Federer, who had a 12-0 career record against Soderling, won the first set without much sweat, and so it became even harder to imagine this:

After making 23 straight Grand Slam semifinals, Federer is out of a major tournament in the quarterfinals. His streak of excellence was ended by the fifth-seeded Soderling, who beat the top-seeded Federer, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

“People don’t understand what a big deal that is,” said U.S. Davis Cup captain and ESPN broadcaster Patrick McEnroe of Federer’s Slam semifinal streak.

Federer was able to joke about it afterward.

“It was a great run,” he said. “Now I’ve got the quarterfinal streak going, I guess.”

If the second-seeded Rafael Nadal goes on to win the tournament, the Spaniard will replace Federer as the No. 1-ranked player next week.

A year ago that seemed unlikely after Soderling had upset Nadal at the French Open. It was the first time Nadal had ever lost at Roland Garros, but it showed that Soderling had a high-powered game that could also be used effectively on the slow French red clay.

Tuesday’s match began to turn toward Soderling in the third set after the players had returned to court after a 75-minute rain delay. In the 10th game, on his serve, Federer showed some nerves. He double-faulted at deuce and the crowd gasped.

The double fault gave Soderling a break point and the Swede won the game on the next point. Soderling then served out the set, finishing it with a stylish ace, and Federer seemed frustrated. He threw up his palms. The gesture seemed to say, “Help!”

McEnroe said that Soderling, 25, was one of the few men with strength enough on his groundstrokes to “hit through” the murky conditions at Roland Garros, with the clay playing even slower because of rain.

“The balls got heavy but I’ve played good matches in these kinds of conditions,” Soderling said. “It suits my game.”

Still, the match started as if it would be a Federer runaway. Federer won 22 of his first 24 service points. But in the first game of the second set, after being up 30-0 on his serve, Federer’s focus seemed to desert him. He lost four straight points and got broken. Soderling held his own serve the rest of the set, and suddenly Federer had lost his first set of the tournament.

McEnroe said it was too early to suggest this might be a sign of a downward trend for Federer, who rebounded to win the Australian Open last January after he had been upset in the finals of the U.S. Open last fall by Juan Martin del Potro.

“Soderling played the match of his life,” McEnroe said. “I think he kind of made the decision to go for broke today, and any opportunity he had he took it.”

Federer seemed able to shrug off the loss and already start looking ahead to grass courts of Wimbledon, where he has won six of the last seven titles.

“You take the defeat as it is,” Federer said. “You don’t think of the consequences. I guess I’m most disappointed that I can’t defend my title here. I really felt like my tennis was good enough to come here and do it again, but that was not the case today.”

Federer’s loss wasn’t the only upset of the day.

Italian veteran Francesca Schiavone, seeded 17th, became the first Italian woman to make the semifinals at the French Open since 1954 when she upset third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-2, 6-3. She will play fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva in the semifinals. Dementieva beat fellow Russian Nadia Petrova 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 Tuesday. Petrova had upset second-seeded Venus Williams in the fourth round.

ATP World Finals – Novak Djokovic vs Robin Soderling Live Streaming

Watch Novak Djokovic vs Robin Soderling Live Streaming:

Novak Djokovic broke the ice against Nikolay Davydenko in the opening round of the ATP World Tour Finals and thus successfully began his title defence. Nerves of steel turned the 167-minute encounter against the Russian, while Djokovic could ensure his place in the knockout phase of the London event if he manages to beat the world’s number nine, Sweden’s Robin Soderling.

Soderling looked the most impressive player in the competition so far on Monday when he took Rafael Nadal apart in straight sets. The match was much tenser than the 6-4, 6-4 scoreline suggested but Soderling kept his composure well in the end.

Novak Djokovic won a scrappy match against Nikolay Davydenko which lasted nearly three hours. Djokovic did not look like the player who has just won Basel and Paris back-to-back and was lucky to get through, saving multiple break points in the final set.

Watch Novak Djokovic vs Robin Soderling Live Streaming

Afterwards he played down his chances of beating Soderling. “I’m very exhausted after the long season,” Djokovic said. “I wouldn’t rate myself as favourite in that match because he’s in great form. It’s going to be a tough one.”

However Djokovic has a definite psychological advantage having won all five of his matches against Soderling. It was 6-3, 6-3 in the Beijing semi-finals in September but quite a lot closer a couple of weeks ago in Paris. However Djokovic was still too strong in the end, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and Soderling will need to come up with something extra.

This match will be an interesting barometer for Djokovic’s chances of winning the tournament. So far, Federer and Soderling have shown some equally scintillating end of season form so this will require Djokovic to raise his game.

Nadal reached top ten through in Barcelona

World number one and top ranked Rafael Nadal beaten Portugal’s Federico Gil to lead the top seeds into the Barcelona Open third round on Wednesday. Nadal positioned the great winning instance with his 6-2, 6-2 opening triumph over Gil, and the number 75 whom he hit last month in Miami.

In spite of now possessing a 22-1 record at his “home” event, the phenomenon from across the water in Mallorca said it was not as simple as it expected.

Nadal said, “Winning has not become usual for me. Tennis is also a game of losses; somebody gains every week but not always the same player. Just like in Miami against him, even though I achieved easily I never actually felt entirely relaxed until the ending.”

Nadal now stands 30-3 on the season as he intentions for a fifth Barcelona title in a row to copy his feat last week in Monte Carlo. The Spaniard spanned the first round alongside Gil and played his way out of risk early in the second as he preserved three break points in the second game to make it 2-0 with an inside out forehand winner.

Once the 22 year old settled in, he relieved towards the third round after 89 minutes on court. Nadal stands 139-4 on clay since 2005 and 23-1 in clay court finals. His only failure here came in the 2003 second round to compatriot Alex Corretja. Participating in the day’s triumph progress was Nadal’s second seeded compatriot Fernando Verdasco, with the Australian Open semi finalist taking out Nicolas Lapentti 7-5, 6-3.

World number three Nikolay Davydenko complied suit, dispatching French veteran Arnaud Clement 7-6 (7/2), 6-2. Gaudio, now the world 966, was the 2002 Barcelona champion back in his heyday, exciting the initial of eight career titles starting at the Real club.

Robredo said, “I wished to win poorly in front of the Spanish fans. Gaston was producing all of the faults. He indicated what a grand player he was by playing me hard in the initial set, it was not easy for me to close it out. But after that I comfortable and wind up the match much easier.”

Number 14 Swede Robin Soderling took a failure and loss as he went out to Italy’s Potito Starace 7-6 (7/5), 2-6, 6-2.
