While walking around ShoWest yesterday, I came across some promotional artwork for Hannover House.  On the poster they had info for their upcoming releases and it revealed the release dates for Joel Schumacher’s Twelve (June 18), Racing Dreams (May 14), The Wild Hunt (May 28), and Thru The Moebius Strip (August 6).  The artwork also had posters for all the movies.

While I hated Schumacher’s Twelve when I saw it at Sundance (video review here), it’s one of those films you won’t believe is as bad as everyone tells you until you see it for yourself.  Also, with the cast – it also stars Emma Roberts, 50 Cent, Ellen Barkin and Rory Culkin – you’ll probably end up seeing it.  But trust me, it’s a hot mess of a movie .  The only reason it sold at Sundance is the cast. If you’ve seen Gossip Girl, Twelve takes place in a similar world – super rich upper east side New Yorkers.  But Gossip Girl is like a Scorsese film compared to Twelve.  Hit the jump to check out the posters.

We are a spoiled bunch here in the west. You cannot throw a rock in the air without hitting a computer animator on the head. We’ve been endulging on CGI films for years now. China has finally stepped up to the plate and while they certainly don’t hit it out of the park you got to admire the fortitude and ambition of the first Chinese made full-length 3-D animation film, Thru the Moebius Strip.

Created from the imagination of French comic artist Jean Giraud [The Fifth Element, Alien, Blade Runner, Blueberry] this has been a long project and the more I see of this the more I appreciate the ambition. Putting style, advancement of the art [?] and its place in world animation aside those behind the project deserve kudos. This isn’t Pixar or Square Enix but you have to appreciate the effort.

At the 2010 Australian Open Blake defeated French veteran Arnaud Clément 7-5, 7-5, 6-2 in the first round. He faced 4th seed Juan Martín del Potro in the second round, losing a classic in five grueling sets 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-5, 3-6, 8-10.

It is an unusual situation for Capello’s side to be under such pressure, especially after a qualifying campaign that saw them lose just once, but the Italian’s secrecy over his team selection has not helped matters and the press have gone into overdrive, creating a frosty atmosphere with the coach that worsened when he snapped at photographers recently.

With injury issues surrounding Ledley King, Jamie Carragher has been called into action at the heart of the defence alongside John Terry and, worryingly, there is now a distinct lack of pace in the centre. Algeria are not blessed with speed at the back either and there were rumours before the game that Jermain Defoe could be given a chance to run at the defenders in place of the lumbering Emile Heskey, with Peter Crouch’s height continuing to be used as an option off the bench.

With the pace of Lennon and Johnson down the right, Algeria will look to left-back Nadir Belhadj to hold off their attacks and use his own speed to push them back into their own half. A defensive 4-5-1 formation from their opening game against Slovenia suggests that they won’t be pushing forward with that much gusto, but the defeat already on their record means they need a win and should be looking to score early and then sit back. Former Marseille star Karim Ziani will be key to Algeria’s hopes in the final third and his combination play with striker Rafik Djebbour could prove their best hope of scoring, especially on the counter attack.

Although this will be the first meeting between England and Algeria, the Three Lions have kept a clean sheet in four of their five World Cup encounters against African sides.

England player to watch: Gareth Barry. A gaping hole in the England midfield was left when Barry went down with an ankle injury before the tournament, and Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were left to try to fill in against USA. Barry is fit again now, so the defensive midfield slot is assured and the balance of the England side is much better. The left-footer will be alongside Lampard, with Gerrard switched to the left, and suddenly England look capable of providing more of an attacking threat.

Algeria player to watch: Hassan Yebda. The ‘heart and soul’ of the team, Yebda’s tracking back and tigerish tackling will assist in keeping the wing threat of England down. But he also has his own box of tricks and is a very capable crosser and dribbler of the ball. While he would want more in terms of a goal return, how he deals with Gerrard on the left of the midfield will determine how Algeria compete.

Key battle: Robert Green v David James v Joe Hart v Faouzi Chaouchi. A rather odd battle perhaps, but whichever England goalkeeper gets the nod in the end will have his hands full with the media spotlight and will be under pressure not to make a mistake. Green is expected to keep the gloves, despite his error against USA and conventional wisdom suggests James will take his place if he is dropped, although Hart has been the man in form of late. Algeria’s Chaouchi is under his own pressure after his mistake against Slovenia gifted them the win, so the ‘keepers at both ends of the pitch will be key to the game.

Trivia: Algeria’s national anthem is called “Qassaman” – (The Pledge). Qassaman was written during Algeria’s struggle for independence from French colonial rule. Seventeen of the 23 Algerian players were born in France.

Stats: England have never lost against an African team: 11 wins and four draws, while Algeria have never kept a clean sheet in seven World Cup matches.

Odds: England (1.25), Algeria (12.00) and the draw (6.25) are all on offer at Bet 365, but Steven Gerrard to score last at 8.00 looks a nice bet.

Fears for France ahead of Uruguay opener
Historians of French football did not have to search too far back in the record books for worrying omens when the World Cup draw was made. In 2002, when les Bleus surrendered their crown in such meek fashion, it was a 0-0 draw in their second game against Uruguay that truly confirmed their fall from grace.France do not approach the 2010 finals enjoying the lofty status of world beaters, though. In fact, having infamously required a Thierry Henry handball to edge past Republic of Ireland in a play-off and suffered a defeat in a warm-up game against China’s second string, Raymond Domenech’s side look ripe for another early exit in Group A. With Lassana Diarra absent due to injury, and Henry exiled to the bench, France are also grappling with an experimental 4-3-3 formation that is open to exploitation.

In contrast, Uruguay – winners in 1930 and 1950, but competing in only their second finals since 1990 – appear high in confidence, with captain Diego Lugano boasting Oscar Tabarez’s side are hitting their best form. Whether that is enough to take advantage of France’s very evident problems remains to be seen.

Uruguay player in focus: Diego Forlan. Cometh the hour, cometh the man? In recent seasons, Forlan has proved to be the player for the big occasion and in May scored both of Atletico Madrid’s goals in the Europa League final. Forlan top-scored for Uruguay in qualification with seven goals and, in his only match of the 2002 World Cup, netted in a 3-3 draw with Senegal. The striker has reached double figures in each of his past six seasons in Spain.

France player in focus: Franck Ribery. The Bayern Munich star missed the Champions League final due to suspension and must be keen to make amends. Ribery was one of the breakthrough stars of the last World Cup but has seen his preparations for the current tournament disrupted by a sex scandal, though he remains a key figure for les Bleus. Raymond Domenech needs Ribery to flourish in an unfamiliar 4-3-3 formation if the country are to enjoy a trouble-free group stage.

Key battle: Luis Suarez v William Gallas. The Uruguay forward is arguably world football’s most in-form player heading into the finals having scored a remarkable 49 goals for Ajax last season. In Gallas, he faces an opponent who has been recovering from injury and has yet to prove he can strike up a productive partnership with Eric Abidal in the heart of Domenech’s defence, but the Frenchman’s form at Arsenal was impressive in the first half of the season.

Trivia: Diego Forlan’s father, Pablo, was named in the Uruguay squads for both the 1966 and 1974 World Cup finals.

Stats: Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan scored 71 goals between them in all competitions last season. France’s five forwards – Thierry Henry, Sidney Govou, Andre-Pierre Gignac, Djibril Cisse and Nicolas Anelka – managed just 59.

A deliciously unpredictable start to the tennis year has been summed up by the current unseasonal weather here in Sydney – all cloud and thundercracks – mixed with record temperatures down the coast in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open.

And on the courts of the east, in the first two weeks of the season, we’ve had a 15-year old Brit beating the world number 26, a Henin/Clijsters classic final to roll back the years, a title for a player facing suspension only days previously, and mutterings of a new tennis “World Cup” to keep the off-court motors chugging. Delicious indeed.

So where to start?

The omnipresent Nikolay Davydenko seems to be the man of the moment on the ATP Tour. This man, I have to hold my hands up and admit, is quite amazing.

His relentless pursuit of points, pounds and prizes is now backed up by a livelier brand of flat and furious hitting which, in Doha, claimed back-to-back wins over Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to win the Qatar Open, the perfect follow up to his 2009 season-ending success at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Perhaps these recent scalps will give him the belief to take the next step and win a major (his win over Federer was his second in three months, after seven years of trying in vain against the Swiss) but he remains a long shot for the title due to the talent ahead of him.

Nadal, the defending Aussie Open champion, is ready to prove that his troubles at the end of 2009 are behind him. Some extra depth on his groundstrokes – particularly his return of serve – has been noticeable in the early weeks of 2010.

Federer will be looking to reclaim the title he last won in 2007, Juan Martin Del Potro is going for back-to-back majors (not out of the question by any means), and Andy Murray will put some extra bite behind his crosscourt forehand, if recent evidence is anything to go by, in his search for a debut Slam.

Add the likes of Djokovic, Roddick, Tsonga, Verdasco and Soderling, and this could be a classic tournament.

The women’s event has an extra pinch of turmeric thanks to the return of Justine Henin on a wild-card. Just like compatriot Kim Clijsters at last year’s US Open, Henin is perfectly capable of going all the way and winning the title.

She may have pulled out of the Sydney event with a leg injury, but she was on the practice courts as soon as she arrived in Melbourne, looking fit and determined.

And the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour will struggle to host a better match this year than the final the Belgian pair contested in Brisbane, at the close of Henin’s comeback week.

Over two hours and 23 minutes, they played out a greatest-hits-collection of a match, complete with Henin comebacks from dead positions, before Clijsters edged it 8-6 in the deciding tie-break. Stunning stuff.

After a few mediocre years, with stuttering attempts from Safina, Ivanovic and Jankovic to rule the world, we have the two Williams sisters and the two Belgians set to contest the heavyweight matches. Just like old days.

That’s not to write off the next generation. Far from it. I’m excited about seeing further progress in 2010 from the likes of Wozniacki, Azarenka, Lisicki, Oudin and the other 15 or 16-year-old we haven’t even heard of yet.
