Rafael Nadal vs Andy Murray — Wimbledon 2010

bit.ly Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray meet in the semifinals of Wimbledon in what is shaping up to be an epic match. The last time these two met in a major — the 2010 Australian Open — Murray beat Nadal in straights when the Spaniard retired in the third with a knee injury. Rafa is coming off a masterful performance against Soderling. He only committed twelve unforced errors the entire match and broke Soderling down after the Swede’s fast start. Murray will have to use his considerable variety to play offense — he can’t sit back and simply move the ball around the court in a semi-passive manner. Nadal is playing too well for that and will dominate the match if the Scot elects to use that strategy. Murray probably knows this and I expect him to implement a game plan similar to the one he used against Nadal in Australian — serve big, attack second serves, and play selectively aggressive. So what’s my prediction? I think Nadal takes this match in five sets. He looked great against Soderling — he defended well and transitioned quickly to the attack when he had a chance — and I think he’ll have a little too much game for Murray. Please join us on our website — www.fuzzyyellowballs.com — during the Wimbledon final on Sunday. We’ll be broadcasting live and giving away cool free prizes!

Djokovic, Nalbandian, Monfils Win in Davis Cup, but Murray Looks On
It’s high summer and in the all-to-brief hiatus between Wimbledon and the start of the North American hard-court swing, there’s just enough time for the best tennis nations to go head-to-head in the Davis Cup. In four far-flung parts of the world, they lock horns in the quarterfinals of a competition that could take them to national glory at the end of the year. The big question, as the tie got …

ATP: Watch Andy Murray Vs Fernando Verdasco

Andy Murray Vs Fernando Verdasco Live Stream Barclays ATP World

Murray’s task is clear; a straight sets win will secure his progress. However if he drops a set or loses then things become complicated and depending on the result of Roger Federer’s match with Juan Martin Del Potro later in the day, any two of those three players could progress.

Verdasco may already be out after three set losses to Federer and Del Potro but he will be looking to finish the tournament in style before he moves on to the Davis Cup final in a week and half’s time. Having shattered Murray’s dreams of his first grand slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year, Verdasco knows he can beat the Scot on a big occasion.

Watch Andy Murray Vs Fernando Verdasco Live Score Card

However, Murray has a very comprehensive record against Verdasco, seven wins and just the one loss. He handed out a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing to the Spaniard in the Miami quarter-finals this year and beat him in three sets in Valencia on his comeback a few weeks ago.

Murray may have won that title in Valencia but he has been nowhere near his best form since he returned to the tour. He has been guilty of playing too passively especially this week. He let Federer back into their match on Tuesday and nearly did the same with Del Potro. When he played Verdasco in Valencia, the Spaniard could well have won that match if his forehand hadn’t been quite so wayward.

“I’ve had letdowns in a lot of matches,” Murray said. “I’ve let guys back in the match straight away, early in the second set. And that’s something I was doing really, really well when I was playing a lot, at the beginning of the year. When I was getting ahead, I was not giving guys chances to come back into the matches. That’s something that, these last few tournaments of the year, I’ve not done so well.”

Himfr.com reports Federer squeezes into semis, Murray misses out

World number one Roger Federer squeezed into the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday despite a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3 defeat by Juan Martin del Potro and the result also knocked Andy Murray out of the tournament.

Del Potro and Federer both advanced after a three-way tie in Group A, with Murray’s elimination literally coming down to the last game after three rounds of group matches.

All three players finished the round-robin stage with two wins and identical 5-4 set records, but Murray had the lowest percentage of games won. Had Del Potro lost just one more game against Federer, Murray would have advanced at the Argentine’s expense.

In an earlier match, Murray notched up a 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(3) victory over Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.

“I’m going to go home, get some rest and then see what happens with the match. I definitely won’t watch too much of it. Got to try and look after my body the best that I can, if I get to play another match,” said the 22-year-old Scot.

Verdasco’s defeat ended a miserable outing for Spain at the tournament. The country was the only nation to field two representatives in the elite eight-man line-up but both Verdasco and Rafael Nadal, who was in Group B, were eliminated.

Besides, the urgent need to boost domestic consumption to combat the global downturn demands that the government lessen the people’s educational and other social welfare burdens as much and as soon as possible.

Government-led investment is undoubtedly crucial for the sound growth of the national economy next year. But policymakers should also realize that closing the deficit in public spending on education is equally important.

Andy Murray seeded fourth at Wimbledon

British number one Andy Murray has been seeded fourth for Wimbledon, with defending champion and world number two Roger Federer handed the top seeding.

Defending champion Serena Williams is top seed for the women’s singles with sister Venus at number two.

Federer, six-time Wimbledon champion, received the number one seeding despite being supplanted by Rafael Nadal at the top of the world rankings.

The grass-court Grand Slam starts on 21 June with the draw on Friday.

Wimbledon Hospitality

Spaniard Nadal, who was unable to defend his Wimbledon title last year because of a knee injury, overtook his Swiss rival after winning his fifth French Open crown in Paris earlier this month.

The 23-year-old Murray will be desperate for an improvement in fortune having been hampered by a knee injury and beaten by American Mardy Fish in the third round at Queen’s.

The Scot has admitted he needs more grass-court action and will face former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt at London’s Hurlingham club on Thursday.

Murray, Britain’s number one, suffered a four-set loss to American Andy Roddick in last year’s Wimbledon semi-final and will find out on Friday whether he is in line to face Federer or Nadal in the last four.

Three-time Wimbledon runner-up Roddick, who went on to lose a five-set thriller to Federer in the 2009 final, moves up to fifth seed because of his record on grass, despite being ranked world number seven.

Australia’s Hewitt, ranked 26 in the world, rises to 15th seed after an impressive win over Federer on grass in the Halle final in Germany on Sunday – only Federer’s second defeat on grass in 78 matches.

Discretion is down to the All England Club which seeds the players based on their record on grass.

Wimbledon Hospitality

Wimbledon referee Andrew Jarrett said: “While the seeding positions of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are reversed from their current rankings, there is no practical effect since they remain the leading seeds in their respective halves of the draw.”

The women’s seedings stuck to the world rankings, with the possibility of a fifth all-Williams Wimbledon final following Serena’s win over Venus last year for her third Wimbledon title.

Caroline Wozniacki is third seed and because of the withdrawal of the injured world number five Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic is fourth seed ahead of French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.

Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin, who are both returning to Wimbledon after coming out of retirement, are seeded number eight and 17 respectively.

Grand Slam Tennis – Murray Slips Big Time, Tsonga Wins

It was a pity that the match was being played at the Hisense Arena as it meant that it shall not be given airtime via the TV by my favorite sports channel. I’m not sure though if there were other cable channels who televised the match. It would have been fun for me to watch it as I try to figure out one thing, how did Murray lose the match against Verdasco?

Yep! Andy Murray lost to Fernando Verdasco in five sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. what a crushing blow to the Scot in particular and to British tennis supporters in general. Looking at the tennis live results, he seem to be able to get the upperhand against the Spaniard as he was up two sets to one. I can’t remember him giving up such a lead and eventually losing the match. That isn’t Andy Murray’s style of play. He knows how to finish his opponent off when he is leading. But what happened to him today showed otherwise.

As I checked the stats sheet for the match, it was evident that the two men battled neck and neck. Winners produced were almost equal with Murray having 52 to Verdasco’s 51. Total points won went to Murray with 138 to the Spaniard’s 137. Verdasco had more aces than Murray at 10 to 7  but he had more double faults at 6 to the Scot’s 3. Unforced errors went to Murray who had 40 while Verdasco had 50. I think the most important category that explains Murray’s defeat is his first serve percentage. He only had a 61% average from 85 of 140 total while Verdasco had a 74% as he converted 100 of 135 total serves. It meant that Murray was struggling to put the ball in play with his first serve while Verdasco was making sure his first serve always counts. It also meant that Verdasco was attacking Murray’s second serve which, given the high percentage of 56%,  will not make someone win the match.

As much as I also admire Murray, his latest Grand Slam tennis match loss shows that he still has a lot of things to improve on. As with Novak Djokovic’s problem of being inconsistent, Murray suffers the same thing. Djokovic’s advantage over Murray is his experience, he knows when to play the big points and when Novak sets his mind to it, can really play magnificent tennis throughout a tournament. Remember how he played against Federer last year? Murray, as I said, has to be consistent. Both of these guys just have to observe how Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer do their business in the court, they can learn a trick or two.

In the final men’s fourth round match, Jo Wilfried Tsonga defeated James Blake in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to arrange a quarterfinal showdown against Verdasco. The two shall be playing against each other for the first time. Who ever wins between the two gentlemen  shall than face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Nadal and Gilles Simon of France.

The top half of the quarterfinals shall pit Andy Roddick against Djokovic while Federer shall face Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina. These match ups can provide some juicy details on how the season shall unfold for all of them. A repeat of last year’s semi-final and final match up perhaps? Your guess is as good as mine!

Atp Cincinnati Masters – Murray Takes Trophy Home

The Cincinnati Masters which is part of the nine Masters Series tournaments in the ATP tour was just recently held in Mason, Ohio and to this day it is the oldest tennis event played in the United States. For the surprise of many, the last two men standing were the Serbian Novak Djokovic and the Scot Andy Murray who has positioned himself in the number 6 spot in the rankings after grasping the title in a thriller match.

On his way to achieve his fourth title the Serbian Djokovic was able to beat the unstoppable Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who will soon become the new number one tennis player in the world, after a 32-match winning streak during their semi final game. The world number three Djokovic continues his pursuit for a better spot but the point gap between Nadal and him is now bigger, the difference stands at 1,065 points after the double win the Spaniard was able to pull by grasping two Grand Slams consecutively.

Nevertheless the US$2,750,000 Cincinnati tournament was a delight display of tennis for the fans as these two sensational players reached the final game. Both of them knew that winning this tournament will unfold the road for the final grand slam scenery in the Big Apple within a couple of weeks. Murray whose game has been in ascension after a long-time wrist injury he was unable to recover from until recently showed his best qualities and skills in the sport. He smartly enough knew how to move the pieces and with amazing back hand strokes stunned his rival in two sets.

The final score of the match was 7-6, 7-6 and it latest approximately two hours and 22 minutes. It was a game full of rallies, tie-breaks, and volleys as both players challenged each other constantly. It was amazing to see how much Murray’s game has improved in the last months and how clean his moves appear on the hard surfaces. On the other hand, Djokovic did not step back and his ground strokes continued to surprise us all even Murray who by the very end seemed tired but held on until the last second.

Murray did mention that “I played in these conditions all week so maybe I was more used to it.”There were lots of long, long rallies which took a toll and we were both tired at the end.” Regardless of the long runs this did not make a difference for the Scot who risked his games with heavy constant attacks that drained all of his opponent’s energy.

Now, the Scot moves into the sixth position of the world rankings closely followed by the Argentinean Nalbandian and the American James Blake who are approximately 200 points behind him. The next weeks will be quite in the ATP circuit as the Olympics approach but the action will continue in New York City where history will be written for the top players and those who believe can take on better positions in the 2008 ATP race.
