Upcoming $130 million budgeted new Robin Hood movie epic, which stars Russel Crowe (Robin Hood), reunited with Director Ridley Scott after their very successful Oscar-winning Gladiator, featuring a much bigger, more important and dangerous plot, with a new big enemy – the French. When the film was announced, several major script changes have been made. So, too, are the cast changes in which the final negotiations for the role of Maid Marian, Robin Hood’s love interest was given to Cate Blanchett, wherein the original choice was Sienna Miller who left the project. Cate Blanchett is no stranger doing classical films in which she has portrayed Queen Elizabeth 1 of England in Elizabeth and Lady Galadriel of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. In this newest Robin Hood movie it will feature for the first time two Antipodeans in the lead roles who will star in an English movie – Cate Blanchett an Australian and Crowe, though living in Australia, was born in New Zealand.
So, what’s Cate Blanchett’s character, Maid Marian? Based on literature, the name Maid Marian in which Maid is short for maiden or a lady was simply called Marion. She was first mentioned as Lady Marian of Leaford as the female companion of Robin Hood, the Legendary English Outlaw. Eventhough there is no Maid Marian character in the first surviving evidence of Robin Hood legend from the 14th century, Maid Marian has become the tamer of the heroic outlaw by the 16th century, adding a flavour to the Robin Hood Legend. Todays Maid Marian in this 21st century Ridley Scott’s incarnation of Robin Hood has the lively and fresh, blue-grey eyes of Cate Blanchett. Blanchett’s Marian is deliberately set out to reinvent her beauty that first won Robin Hood’s heart. Whether she’s out there fighting along with the Merry Men against the enemy or arguing with the male authority around her, it only proves that this new Cate Blanchett’s Maid Marian liberates the heroine from her traditional role. Ridley Scott may have given Maid Marian a new power in his new Robin Hood movie, but it a cool change that would make a big difference.

The Bowes Museum – An Anglo-French Love Story

The Bowes Museum – situated in the market town of Barnard Castle, in the beautiful area of Teesdale, County Durham lies only 20 minutes drive along the A66 from the Scotch corner junction of the A1. Its creation belies quite a romantic history.
John Bowes, born in 1811 was the son of the 10th Earl of Strathmore. Although they had lived together as man and wife for many years John’s parents only married 16 hours prior to the death of the Earl of Strathmore. Following a long legal battle where John Bowes was awarded the Durham Estates John was never recognised as the legitimate heir to the Strathmore title. Educated at Eton, John Bowes became a very successful businessman. From 1847 he divided his time between France and England.
John Bowes had a passion for the arts. John Bowes met his future wife in Paris during 1847 where he purchased a theatre – Parisian born actress Josephine Coffin-Chevallier. They married in 1852. Josephine, herself a talented amateur painter shared her husbands passion for the arts and art forms, including paintings, ceramics, furniture and textiles. With the idea of making the art they so loved accessible to “the people” John and Josephine decided to build a museum very close to Barnard Castle. As Josephine laid the foundation stone in 1869 she said: “I lay the bottom stone, and you, Mr. Bowes, will lay the top stone.”
Between them John and Josephine purchased 15,000 objects for the museum during the years between 1862 and 1874. It is tragic that Josephine died in 1874 and never saw the museum completed. Sadly John died in 1885 before the museums completion and so did not fulfil Josephine’s wish of “laying the top stone”. Undeterred by their passing the museum was seen through to completion by the museum trustees and opened it’s doors to the public for the first time on the 10th June 1892.
Although there are so many beautiful pieces of art to see in the museum one of the most famous and from which the museum takes it’s logo is the 230 year old life sized Silver Swan. The Swan is an English Silver automation which is still in working order and is operated daily at the museum. It is simply beautiful.
One can see in the building architecture of the museum the French influence – taking 23 years to build the museum is very similar to a French chateau. The museum gardens were designed by John and Josephine and comprise of formal gardens and parkland. The fountains are magnificent on the terrace at the front of the house.
With its beautiful architecture, fabulous grounds and mouth watering menus the Bowes Museum offers everything and more you could possibly wish for in a wedding venue, a special occasion or simply a brilliant day out with the family.

An Investment You Can Love
For millions of people around the world, stamp collecting is not only a wonderfully enjoyable hobby; it can also be a remarkably profitable investment.
William H. Gross is a familiar figure in the investment world. Author of several books on investing, co-founder of PIMCO and manager of the world’s largest bond fund, he is often referred to as “The Bond King.”
Less well known is the fact that he is also an internationally regarded stamp collector.
When he was a young boy, Gross’ mother started buying sheets of modern-issue stamps from the post office. She thought she was making a smart investment for the future. Unfortunately, when it was time to go to college, Gross found out that the stamps were worth little more than their face value. Happily, he received a scholarship and was off to college anyway.
Gross’ interest in stamps never left him. As he earned his fortune on Wall Street, he started spending more and more money on his hobby. He is now the proud owner of the most complete collection of rare 19th century U.S. stamps anyone has assembled. Amongst these is the 1868 1 cent Benjamin Franklin “Z Grill,” which he acquired in a $3 million trade. It is regarded as the most valuable stamp in the world.
“As I travel around the United States, speaking at various investment conferences, I meet many people who regard collecting stamps as a harmless, if slightly outmoded, pastime. But when Bill Gross put his British stamps up for auction in 2006, investors sat up and took notice” said Stanley Gibbons Investment Portfolio Manager, Geoff Anandappa.
Over the previous 5-10 years, Gross had spent $2 million assembling his collection. When the auction ended, the sale had realized over $10 million. “It’s four times profit,” Gross said. “It’s better than the stock market!”
The Gross auction was a defining moment for rare stamps as an investment asset class. A renowned investor had made serious money from stamps. This was something new for the financial media. But for the 150-year-old Stanley Gibbons, it was old news.
Established in 1856, Stanley Gibbons Ltd. is the oldest and largest stamp dealer in the world. In 1914, King George V awarded the company the Royal Warrant and today, Stanley Gibbons is still Philatelist to the Queen. “This is a small company with a big asset,” said The Times. “Its brand is imbued with an unblemished reputation for expertise and honest dealing.”
Generations of schoolchildren have pored over Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogues and albums. You may have been one of them. Bill Gross is by no means the only famous stamp collector. President Franklin Roosevelt popularized the hobby during the Great Depression. Today, President Nicholas Sarkozy of France is known to be a passionate stamp collector. As is Maria Sharapova, the Russian tennis ace. Many of the royal dynasties of Europe, such as the Rainiers of Monaco, have valuable collections built up over generations. And the most comprehensive collection of British Commonwealth stamps is owned by Queen Elizabeth II.
You may be surprised to learn that most stamp collectors now are in Asia. It is reckoned that, of the 50 million or so registered stamp collectors, 12-15 million are in China. The 2009 World Stamp Exhibition, held in Luoyang, attracted an estimated 750,000 visitors. In India, too, philately is a well-respected hobby amongst the burgeoning middle class. It is estimated that stamp collectors worldwide spend some $10-20 billion each year on their hobby.
Every year, Stanley Gibbons compiles an index of investment-grade stamps, based on the catalogues they’ve been publishing for the past 140 years. For example, the GB30 Rare Stamps Index tracks a portfolio of classic British stamps. It has averaged gains of 9.7% per annum since the 1950s and, during all that time, has never fallen in value.
The GB30 Index demonstrates the value of rare stamps as an alternative investment, uncorrelated with mainstream asset classes. In 2008, when stock markets, property and even gold were tumbling, the GB30 Index was up 38.6%.
Even today, there is relatively little investment money in stamps. Most of the rarities are still owned by dedicated collectors who hold on to them for years. But this is gradually changing, as new investment options are offered. For example, Stanley Gibbons pioneered a number of investment products, some with guaranteed returns and capital protection.
