Serena Williams become Wimbledon 2009 Ladies Single Champion

At Fourth of July, America’s Independence Day, Venus Williams was far from the best. Her progress in wimbledon 2009 Women Final match against her sister Serena Williams had been more impressive, contained fewer games and less stress, but there was not enough in the tank today once the match hit its stride.

At London Club in an 87 minutes match Serena removed the ladies’ singles championship crown from the custody of her older sister Venus. In straight sets of 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2 in. This was Serena’s third Wimbledon title and 11th Grand Slam and was ample amends for her loss to her big sister 12 months ago. It was well deserved as Venus admitted, saying: “Serena had the answer for everything and played the best tennis today, so congratulations.”

Serena had been saying from the start of tornament that it is her turn to win Wimbledon. And since the Williamses have turned this event into a private affair, the only one she really needed to defeat was Venus.

The job was accomplished in typical powerful style, with Venus so worn down that her own game collapsed spectacularly from 2-2 in the second set.

Serena expressed disbelief that she was finally holding once more the Wimbledon trophy, the Venus Rosewater Dish, which might have been named for her sister, who has won it five times, and paid full tribute: “Venus is the greatest on this surface.” At which they both went off for a rest before playing the doubles final.

Once again defending champion Venus Williams will play against her sister Serena Williams in the Wimbledon Tennis Tornament  final for the second straight year. Both sisters ousted Russian opponents today. The 29-year-old Venus took just 51 minutes to beat No. 1 seed Dinara Safina 6-1, 6-0 at the All England Club in London, while Serena saved a match point in the third set before winning 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 8-6 over Elena Dementieva in a match that lasted almost two hours long (2:49). This was the longest women’s semifinal in Wimbledon history.

“It’s a dream come true to be here again and to have the opportunity to hold the plate up,” Venus told the News Channels. “The hardest part is yet to come, and thats to play with my sister, Serena Williams.” Venus is aiming for her sixth title at the only Grand Slam played on grass, and would become the first player since Germany’s Steffi Graf from 1991 to 1993 to win the tournament three years in a row. The sisters will face off in the final at a major for the eighth time. Serena, seeded No. 2 this year, beat Venus, seeded No. 3, for the Wimbledon championship in 2002 and 2003. The championship match will be played on 4th of July 2009, at the U.S. Independence Day holiday. Venus, who also has two titles at the U.S. Open, swept aside Safina with ease, converting all five break points and making just one unforced error.
