Murray requested a wildcard for the clay court tournament; the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters to prevent him losing his No.4 ranking to Juan Martin Del Potro. He entered the doubles competition with Ross Hutchins and stunned World No.10 doubles team Cermak and Meritmak and then lost to the Bryan Brothers on a champions tie breaker. In the singles competition he suffered another early exit, this is thrashing Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2 6-1 in the 2nd Round. He lost the #4 ranking to Del Potro, following the defeat.

Four spectators have been arrested at Wimbledon after an incident involving Romanian player Victor Hanescu. TV pictures appeared to show Hanescu spitting towards fans after allegedly being verbally abused. He then walked off court during his third round match. Police said four youths were held under the Public Order Act after Hanescu had complained to officers. A Wimbledon spokesman said it was possible the allegation of spitting and the arrests were not related incidents. The controversy unfolded on Court 18 as Hanescu found himself 3-0 down in the fifth set against Germany’s Daniel Brands. “The initial thought was that the four people arrested were part of the same spitting incident,” said the Wimbledon official. “But the thinking now is that possibly they weren’t. That was just a random coincidence. Therefore this alleged spitting incident is directed at a different person or people who we don’t know.” A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to Court 18 following a disturbance. “Four youths were arrested. They have all been taken to a south London station under section five of the Public Order Act.” Wimbledon referee Andrew Jarrett has requested a recording of the incident to see if any further action will be taken against the player, who effectively quit the tournament by defaulting his match. “The umpire issued a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct that covers things like spitting and swearing,” added the Wimbledon official. “His report …

Men’s singles favourite Roger Federer opens Thursday’s night session against Victor Hanescu.

Federer has beaten the Romanian three times before with little difficulty but goes into the second round match hoping for a confidence boosting performance after a very shaky first round match.

Federer was close to going two sets to one down against Igor Andreev on Tuesday before pulling things back to win in four, but it was hardly an inspiring performance from the world number one.

Federer (1/100 to beat Hanescu and 11/4 to win the tournament) has been very bullish about his form and chances going into the tournament, but there is a sneaking suspicion that the Swiss is a little vulnerable.

Early season losses to Robin Soderling and Nikolay Davydenko did not help the three-time winner in Melbourne and his performance against Andreev confirmed what many were thinking.

But Hanescu, 14/1 to cause a huge upset tonight, could be the perfect opponent for Federer to get back on track as the Swiss knows his game and likes it.

Hanescu has a good serve but his movement is a bit suspect. He had a good first round win against Juan Ignacio Chela but lost all of his warm-up matches in the Hopman Cup when going up against high quality opposition.

Federer is 2/9 to advance to the third round with a straight sets win.

Roger Federer squeaked past heavy-hitting Igor Andreev on Tuesday but figures to have a much easier task against veteran Romanian Victor Hanescu in the second round. The Swiss, chasing a record-extending 16th major, leads their head-to-heads 3-0 without dropping a set. No sign of trouble, then. Federer survived a mammoth of a battle against Igor Andreev in the first round of the Aussie Open yesterday.

In fact, Federer lost the first set before recovering in four – it marked the first time in six years that Federer lost the first set in the first round major. That performance has thrust Federer’s campaign into some doubt. Together with his two losses to Davydenko at the ATP Barclay’s World Tour Finals and Doha and everyone is wondering whether his impressive record streak of 22-consecutive straight semi-final appearances at a Grand Slam might come to an end in Melbourne.

It is a long way to the final eight. Next up for Federer is Romanian Victor Hanescu – a much easier matchup on paper for Roger Federer. We should see Federer back to his old self, winning in convincing form and hardly breaking into a sweat. In the third round, Federer would face either unheralded Stephane Robert or No.31 seed Albert Montanes. Neither player would be expected to challenge Federer however. So Fed should make it safely through to the last 16.

In the last 16, things could get trickier for Federer if he comes up against home favourite Lleyton Hewitt, 17 th seed David Ferrer or Marcos Baghdatis. Hewitt is a home favourite so there is the crowd to consider. Federer is a favourite everywhere he goes and let us not forget, he has owned Hewitt over the last few years. Rather negates Hewitt’s home edge a bit. Ferrer and Baghdatis are dangerous floaters but to say they could beat Federer, and saying so with any conviction, would be ludicrous. Don’t know anyone who would claim that at this point.
