Australian Open – Nadal Advances to Quarterfinals by Beating Gonzalez

The 5-time Grand Slam champion and currently No.1 of the world, Rafael Nadal, was able to maintain his unbelievable record of not losing a set in this tournament by beating Fernando Gonzalez in great way 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. The game lasted a little less than 2 hours, which was not as long as everyone expected for this game, especially because everyone though that the battle between this two players was going to be more fierce. However, the Spaniard played incredibly good, hitting 33 winners with amazing power shots from different angles and touch, varying speeds and heights.

During the match, Nadal was really confident on his game and it was shown in the first two sets where he won comfortably 6-3, 6-2. Gonzalez was fighting but his poor shots and unforced errors were not helping in the first two sets. Nevertheless, the 2007 runner-up and Chilean Fernando Gonzalez found his way and went up 3-0 in the third set. But the motivation and focused mind of Nadal, gave him the strength to come back to the game by winning five straight games of the set and getting up 5-3 to later enclose the victory with a winner serve. Gonzalez made 35 unforced errors compared to the 11 of Nadal, whereas Nadal had 33 winners contrasting to 22 from the Chilean.

“I am playing well… but you never know if it’s gonna be enough. I hope I continue playing like this, because all the (remaining) matches are very, very difficult. I have to be ready for everything. Maybe the only thing today I can improve a little bit more is the serve,” expressed the Spaniard.

This was the first meeting between Nadal and Gonzalez since the final match of the Beijing Olympics, where Nadal also defeated him in straight sets and won the gold-medal. But we also cannot forget that Gonzalez beat Nadal two years ago in this same Grand Slam scenario. Nevertheless, this time was the chance for the No.1 of the world, who has clearly improved his game since then.

According to some analysts, Nadal’s game is currently ahead of Federer’s, especially in this tournament were Nadal has been unstoppable and Federer has struggled a little on some games, especially in the one against Thomas Berdych, where he lost the first two sets. However, Federer has a great mental strength and a great capacity to get out of the hole when things are not going his way, both are great players and had their goals pretty set for this tournament; Federer is willing to recover the No.1 spot in the ATP and Nadal is looking to win his first hard-court Open.

The next opponent of Rafael Nadal will be the French Gilles Simon, who got into the quarterfinals after his victory against his countryman and friend Gael Monfils. On the other hand, the next contender of Roger Federer will be No. 8 seeded Juan Martin Del Potro, who defeated Marin Cilic in four sets.

We hope the best for Rafael Nadal, who is giving a display of great tennis and amazing mental strength at Melbourne, especially by not dropping a single set in the tournament. His next contender, Simon, is entering to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal and may have a difficult time against this experienced and talented Spaniard, who is in such a great streak.

Andy Roddick vs Fernando Gonzalez — Australian Open 2010

www.fuzzyyellowballs.com Andy Roddick meets Fernando Gonzalez in the fourth round of the 2010 Australian Open. Roddick is 8 – 3 lifetime against Gonzalez. Given how well Andy is playing, Gonzo must serve well to have a chance to win this match. The weakest part of Roddick’s game is his return, so if Gonzalez serves well and limits the number of opportunities Roddick has to break the Chilean may have a shot. That said, every other part of Andy’s game is clicking — the serve, the forehand and backhand, his movement, the mental game, etc. FYB’s view is that Roddick has too much game for Gonzalez and the American will win in 3 or 4 sets and advance to the Australian Open quarterfinals.

Federer Murray advances in Indian Wells

Roger Federer made his brilliant and excellent record against Fernando Gonzalez to 12-1 with a three-set conquest Wednesday and qualified for the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open.

Federer’ play spotty but excellent and sufficient enough to keep carry on his domination of his frequent opponent, ousted Gonzalez 6-3, 5-7, and 6-2. On the other hand Andy Roddick, who is the only American remaining in the singles draw, get back strongly in the third set to beat David Ferrer 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3. Roddick accomplished with 10 aces against his Spanish opponent in the contest played between them, who served eight of his own.

Roddick, had difficulty keeping his shots on the court in the second round when ranked No. 7 and then he obtained the limit once again in the third to pull out the match. He did with 38 unforced errors, five more than Ferrer.

Defending champion and No. 3 Novak Djokovic outlasted Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6). Juan Martin Del Potro defeated John Isner 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), and Ivan Ljubicic downed Igor Andreev 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4). Andy Murray too superior, stretching his well 2009 start to 18-1 when Tommy Robredo retired in the second set of their match due to the wrist injury. Murray got victory in the first set 6-2 and was up 3-0 in the second.

After losing his four-year hold on the top spot to Rafael Nadal last year Federer, ranked No. 2, was conflicting against No. 17 Gonzalez. The Chilean fought and struggled his way back into the match in the second set, overcoming initial disappointment he had vented by slamming a racket onto the court three times and shattering it. Federer, the tournament champion three successive years beginning in 2004, said he felt that he finally was able to set up some rhythm in his game after playing frequently serve and return against his first two opponents.

Federer said, “Today was a bit more baselines, even though I couldn’t discover his (Gonzalez’s) backhand”. “If you don’t find his backhand, the point is over hurriedly. He has such a massive forehand. “I’m looking ahead to playing against (Fernando) Verdasco. It’s a good thing that I’m still in the tournament and going well along with facing an opponent who actually is going to extend the rallies a little bit.”

Verdasco overcome Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to get the quarterfinal chance against Federer. Murray, ranked No. 4, said he anticipated a hard test heading into his match against Robredo. The 21years old Scot said “I was expecting a hard and tough match. I had misplaced to Tommy two prior times I played him”. “I knew I had to be on my game.”

Murray said, he was well conscious that Robredo had a problem with his wrist, though he still seemed to be hitting the ball very well. “But spiritually and mentally, a wrist problem can be harsh and also can make ones tough during match,” Murray further said. “I know because I’ve been through it. It’s just the pain that’s there and feeling like something might happen.”

And on the women’s side, No. 6 Vera Zvonareva defeated No. 13 Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-2.
