To get that straight-sets victory, however, the Scot will need to rediscover the clinical form which he badly missed against Federer. At his best there is no stopping Murray when he gets in front in a match, even against his toughest rivals. More recently, as he reflected, he has lacked that consistency.

“I’ve had letdowns in a lot of matches,” Murray said. “I’ve let guys back in the match straight away, early in the second set. And that’s something I was doing really, really well when I was playing a lot, at the beginning of the year. When I was getting ahead, I was not giving guys chances to come back into the matches. However, Murray has a very comprehensive record against Verdasco, seven wins and just the one loss. He handed out a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing to the Spaniard in the Miami quarter-finals this year and beat him in three sets in Valencia on his comeback a few weeks ago.

Murray may have won that title in Valencia but he has been nowhere near his best form since he returned to the tour. He has been guilty of playing too passively especially this week. He let Federer back into their match on Tuesday and nearly did the same with Del Potro. When he played Verdasco in Valencia, the Spaniard could well have won that match if his forehand hadn’t been quite so wayward.

Gulbis claimed wins in the first two rounds of the Australian Open precursor tournament, the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, defeating 6th seeded Spaniard Albert Montañés 6-2, 7-5, and subsequently Italian Andreas Seppi 6-4, 7-5. Gulbis progressed on to the third round, where he was defeated in a tight match against world number 1 Roger Federer 2-6, 6-4, 4-6. At the 2010 Australian Open itself, Gulbis was ousted in the first round by 30th Seed Argentine Juan Monaco in straight sets.

In February, Gulbis reached his second career semifinal at an ATP 500 event, the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis, Tennessee. Gulbis defeated swiss player Marco Chiudinelli in the first round, but succumbed to No. 5 seed Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 6-4 in the second round, who was playing with a broken wrist. Ernests missed the Sony Ericsson Open and reappeared in Monte Carlo. He again beat Chiudinelli and then lost to Stanislas Wawrinka.
