Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – European Soccer- Spain Beats France And England Beats Egypt On Friendly Matches
On Wednesday, the top European teams demonstrated why they are the favorites to win the next World Cup, held this year in South Africa.
Spain took France in a much-anticipated match between two of the favorite European teams; without a doubt, however, Spain proved its superiority, surpassing France in a 2-0 victory in the Stade de France. This victory was Spain’s first in French territory since 1968.
Spain has proven that it has a very solid team, winning 42 of the last 45 games; its last defeat was against the United States at the Confederations Cup.
The Spaniards started creating opportunities from the beginning of the game. The first clear chance came at minute 18, when Xabi Alonso’s free kick went too wide and David Villa was unable to control the ball. The first goal came just a minute later, when David Silva missed a pass from Andres Iniesta after beating Julien Escude; Vila managed to take the ball and finish the play, passing French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The second goal came in the first half as well, at minute 45, when Alonso was able to take the ball from Yoann Gourcuff and pass directly to Sergio Ramos. Ramos, already in the area, made a left-footed shot that arced into the far side of the net.
The French players went into halftime already down by 2, and their anxiety showed. Under pressure, the French team emerged in the second half with clear intentions of beating the Spanish team. Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, and Djibril Cisse had clear opportunities, but their efforts produced no points, and the French team lost the game, 2-0.
The same evening, England played Egypt at the Wembley Stadium in London. After a bad start, England managed to take the match 3-1, overcoming a first goal scored by the Egyptians.
The Egyptian team was a strong rival; it had won the African Nations Cup last month, a prize that left the players highly motivated. Indeed, the Egyptians may even be better than some of the best teams in Europe; judging from the African tournament, they might prove themselves solid contenders in the World Cup.
Egypt opened the score at minute 30, when Wael Gomaa sent a volley that England’s goalkeeper, Robert Green, seemed able to control. But Mathew Upson lost control of the ball, leaving a clear shot for Mohamed Zidan, who didn’t hesitate; his shot launched straight into the English team’s net.
The English team had a slow start. The players had clear opportunities but failed to convert, and went into halftime down 1-0.
The second half, however, saw a different game. England was able to score three goals, a minutes 56, 75, and 80, regaining its confidence. The goals weren’t easy, but Egypt’s defense left enough gaps that allowed the English team to convert. Egypt had opportunities as well, but against a resurgent England, one of the favorites for the World Cup, the team was unable to capitalize. England took the game, 3-1.

James Haskell Will Stay To Avoid England Axe After Warning From Martin Johnson ? Autumn Internationals 2010
James Haskell is ready to risk his future at Stade Francais by staying with England this weekend after being warned by Martin Johnson that he will be thrown out of the squad if he returns to his club.
The 24-year-old has been plunged into the middle of a club-versus-country row after his employers asked him to return to Paris for a Top 14 showdown with Toulouse tomorrow. The RFU turned down the request, suggesting they had an agreement with Stade clearing Haskell to remain with the squad during the RBS Six Nations.
The governing body’s director of elite rugby, Rob Andrew, conceded yesterday that no such agreement exists, but insisted England had received assurances from the player’s advisers that his contract covered all training sessions and rest periods between Tests. However, his contract does not contain such detail.
Stade owner Max Guazzini is incensed by the rigid stance of England and the RFU, given that his club have an injury crisis and have released their player whenever they have been asked to do so. They have issued a written warning to Haskell for missing training, brought in independent legal advisers to verify his absence and have made threats about re-negotiating his contract.
Haskell spoke to Stade yesterday and is aware of the scale of their anger. But the RFU are determined to avoid this becoming a test case which opens the way for French clubs to either withdraw players or demand compensation for allowing them to fulfil England duties.
Haskell has been told that if he goes back to play for Stade, he will be banished from the squad and may struggle to fight his way back. As one source put it: ‘They’re going to hang him out to dry and if it means he’s the sacrificial lamb, then so be it.’
Andrew made it clear the onus was on the player to find a solution to this complex situation, saying: ‘The position is between the player and the club. We have spoken to Stade. There is no issue here between the RFU and Stade Francais.
‘The French clubs have been fantastic. We’ve had a really good working relationship with all of them. This is the first and only incident that we have had to deal with in this first season of having players over in France. It is effectively a decision between the player and the club. It is between the player and his advisers as to what he thinks he has in his agreement with the club when he is on England duty, specifically given he is in the England 22, which is the whole basis of the agreement we set up with the Premiership.’
Yet Haskell may not be much use to Stade this weekend because he has been laid low by a stomach bug.
England boss Johnson insisted it was not a ruse designed to keep Haskell out of his club’s clutches, saying: ‘I’ve spoken to the doctor and he said, “You can’t fake those symptoms”. Joe Worsley took his place in training.’

Rob Andrew Says James Haskell Affair Means England Selection Rethink ? Autumn Internationals 2010
Andrew said: “When we made the call last July about whether we should involve players based in France, having had meetings with the relevant French clubs, we knew that at some point this may happen. The policy is open to review at any stage after the end of this campaign. We have to look at who is in France, what their circumstances are and make another call on what happens next season.
“We need to be absolutely clear these are the circumstances under which players who are based in France will be considered for England. This is the one ripple we have had and we have enjoyed excellent relationships with the French clubs. We want to make sure that going into next season, which is World Cup year, that we have all this covered. We cannot have a situation where we have fights and compromises: we had plenty of those with the English clubs and do not want them again.”
Stade wanted Haskell to play against Toulouse , arguing England had to release him because a rest weekend in the Six Nations meant the International Rugby Board regulation on player release did not apply and that the 24-year old would be in breach of contract if he failed to return. The RFU refused after the player’s lawyer said Haskell had an agreement with his club that allowed him to be released for Test duty in line with the elite player deal to which Premiership clubs have signed up. Ironically, Haskell was in bed yesterday after contracting a virus.
England play New Zealand in December, a match that will not be covered by the IRB regulation governing player release. Any player based in France who does not have an agreement with his club will not be released. England also have pre-World Cup training camps for which French clubs will not be bound to release players.
“When players went to France last year, we told them all they would only be considered for the national side if they gave us assurances that they could be released for England when Martin Johnson [the team manager] wanted them,” said Andrew. “We did not want players who could not fulfil the same criteria as those based in England. Some of got that in their contracts directly, others negotiated separately with their clubs after they signed their original contracts. A misconception this week is that the RFU has an agreement with clubs in France. We do not.
“We have been given assurances by James and his advisers that he has an agreement with Stade that allows him to fulfil the release periods for England training as per the EPS agreement. The position this week has been between the player and the club. We have spoken convivially to Stade about the RFU’s position and there is no issue between us.”
Andrew said he had not seen the agreement between Stade and Haskell: “It is confidential between player and his club. If the club does not give authority for that piece of paper to be shown to us we can only go on an undertaking from a lawyer, which we have in James’s case, that they have the release rights.”
Johnson said: “We are not prepared to compromise the management of players, which is based on what we think they need. We told Stade on Sunday of our intention to keep all the players who started against Ireland to keep them fresh for Scotland and the following day they said they wanted James back. I do not think he will be affected by all this.”
Johnson said he did not expect the full-back Delon Armitage and the lock Simon Shaw, who suffered rib and shoulder injuries against Ireland, to face Scotland. Ben Foden and Louis Deacon have stayed with the squad. Joe Worsley was called up for training when Haskell fell ill.

England Vs Algeria Team Profile:
England : Group C
The Three Lions go into 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals hoping to add to their solitary World Cup trophy that was famously won by Alf Ramsey’s ‘Wingless Wonders’ in 1966, when England hosted the event. With Fabio Capello at the helm, England swept through the qualification matches for the Finals, winning all but one match along the way, which culminated in the Lions’ 5-1 win over old enemy Croatia, giving them a place in South Africa with two games to spare.England is deep in all positions, particularly in the middle of the park, where Steven Gerrard and Frank Lamapard anchor a formidable midfield.
Chances for England to win Fifa World Cup Football 2010:
Stormed through qualification under Capello, whose winning pedigree in club football suggests a more ruthless and focused England are a good bet for at least a semi-final place. An easy draw threw up a straight-forward group but in the first knockout stage a showdown with Germany, Australia, Ghana or Serbia beckons.
Algeria : Group C
Algeria overcame fierce rivals Egypt in a one-off play-off after both countries finished level on points at the top of their group. In the neutral venue of Sudan, Algeria triumphed by a solitary goal by defender Antar Yahia to advance to their third World Cup finals appearance.Upon qualification, Algeria coach Rabah Saadane praised the commitment shown by his players. The Desert Foxes have failed to get out of the group stages during their last two finals outings and they will need the same commitment they showed against Egypt to qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time in their history.
Chances for Algeria to win Fifa World Cup Football 2010:
Qualifiers for the third time after eliminating Africa’s continental champions Egypt, Saadane’s men are defensively solid and are unlikely to be on the end of any thrashings in South Africa. That said, qualification for the last 16 looks too much to ask.

It is an unusual situation for Capello’s side to be under such pressure, especially after a qualifying campaign that saw them lose just once, but the Italian’s secrecy over his team selection has not helped matters and the press have gone into overdrive, creating a frosty atmosphere with the coach that worsened when he snapped at photographers recently.
With injury issues surrounding Ledley King, Jamie Carragher has been called into action at the heart of the defence alongside John Terry and, worryingly, there is now a distinct lack of pace in the centre. Algeria are not blessed with speed at the back either and there were rumours before the game that Jermain Defoe could be given a chance to run at the defenders in place of the lumbering Emile Heskey, with Peter Crouch’s height continuing to be used as an option off the bench.
With the pace of Lennon and Johnson down the right, Algeria will look to left-back Nadir Belhadj to hold off their attacks and use his own speed to push them back into their own half. A defensive 4-5-1 formation from their opening game against Slovenia suggests that they won’t be pushing forward with that much gusto, but the defeat already on their record means they need a win and should be looking to score early and then sit back. Former Marseille star Karim Ziani will be key to Algeria’s hopes in the final third and his combination play with striker Rafik Djebbour could prove their best hope of scoring, especially on the counter attack.
Although this will be the first meeting between England and Algeria, the Three Lions have kept a clean sheet in four of their five World Cup encounters against African sides.
England player to watch: Gareth Barry. A gaping hole in the England midfield was left when Barry went down with an ankle injury before the tournament, and Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard were left to try to fill in against USA. Barry is fit again now, so the defensive midfield slot is assured and the balance of the England side is much better. The left-footer will be alongside Lampard, with Gerrard switched to the left, and suddenly England look capable of providing more of an attacking threat.
Algeria player to watch: Hassan Yebda. The ‘heart and soul’ of the team, Yebda’s tracking back and tigerish tackling will assist in keeping the wing threat of England down. But he also has his own box of tricks and is a very capable crosser and dribbler of the ball. While he would want more in terms of a goal return, how he deals with Gerrard on the left of the midfield will determine how Algeria compete.
Key battle: Robert Green v David James v Joe Hart v Faouzi Chaouchi. A rather odd battle perhaps, but whichever England goalkeeper gets the nod in the end will have his hands full with the media spotlight and will be under pressure not to make a mistake. Green is expected to keep the gloves, despite his error against USA and conventional wisdom suggests James will take his place if he is dropped, although Hart has been the man in form of late. Algeria’s Chaouchi is under his own pressure after his mistake against Slovenia gifted them the win, so the ‘keepers at both ends of the pitch will be key to the game.
Trivia: Algeria’s national anthem is called “Qassaman” – (The Pledge). Qassaman was written during Algeria’s struggle for independence from French colonial rule. Seventeen of the 23 Algerian players were born in France.
Stats: England have never lost against an African team: 11 wins and four draws, while Algeria have never kept a clean sheet in seven World Cup matches.
Odds: England (1.25), Algeria (12.00) and the draw (6.25) are all on offer at Bet 365, but Steven Gerrard to score last at 8.00 looks a nice bet.
Prediction: England stuttered a bit in the first game, but then so did Algeria. If England get an early goal it will settle the nerves, otherwise it will be tough to break down the Algerian side.

What do you think of Rafael Nadal playing cricket for England?
I think Rafael Nadal should be selected in the England one-day team. The amount of top-spin he puts on the ball will make it very hard for batsmen to score runs off him. And with his power, he can be a useful middle order batsman. How about picking him for the Champon’s Trophy? And of course, he is still young! The only thing we don’t know is about his fielding skills. But since he works so hard, he should be able to learn quickly.
