Most Americans and many hardcore gamblers across the world make use of English football betting to earn several dollars every year by betting sports on-line. Not only is this used for earning huge income, they are also utilized for college football betting. The excellent football betting advice that is recommended often is to research and find prior to choosing a pick.

Most of the football experts offer you betting tips; even the media circulates latest news regarding opponent teams & their book makers, key players who support several betting methods. But, when you place your wager on a sure favourite of yours, then this is surely the time when you need to pray. Unfortunately, the English football betting indeed is quite changeable. As there exist 1000s of factors that play against us. So, how can I cut down my betting losses? Well, the best way out is by making use of the money-management strategies. In fact this article is an eye opener which reflects on the methods & betting money-management strategies that offers a comparison statistically of the performance as per the betting odds & match results mainly of the pinnacle European leagues.

However, the commonly used English football betting money managing strategies are: Kelly, row-of-numbers and Martingale. While the 1st two don’t need any prior details, the Kelly criterion needs punter to decide on probability of win.

So, let’s consider the football betting tips.

- Prior to presenting performance analysis, one must take a look at the strategies that were mentioned before.

a.) Martingale strategy: Is doubling a stack after losing and returning once again to starting stack, once you have gained a win. In fact this is a well known strategy which promises positive profits; however, they require intensive cash investments.

b.) Row-of-numbers: Is planning several series of the constant profits. When betting odds are given to you, punter calculates for every stake so as to permit them to attain planned profit. And while they lose, they must increase the upcoming stack in a way to get profit both as money that was already lost & planned profits mainly for lost games. Indeed this is a less aggressive strategy which is still dangerous.

c.) Kelly criterion: Is proven to be mathematically a best strategy while in the long run. But, it needs one to know the winning probability. Here, stacks are premeditated proportionally to your fund size and as per the relation with the betting-odds and winning probability. When odds and probability are high, one high-stack would be positioned & vice-versa.

-Data & Methods: For evaluating the performance-rate of every strategy, one needs to analyse betting-odds that is set by the bookmakers for top leagues of Europe. In fact bookmakers are the punters who position a stake with minimalist betting odds on your favorite. Thus, one can estimate the winning probability easily by dividing the average away/draw/home outcomes with the overall number of such games in the season. Indeed the betting loses and results are considered from 4 European top-most leagues that play in the season like ‘Spanish Primera Division’, ‘German Bundesliga 1′, ‘French Ligue 1′ and English Premier.

On a final note, go ahead and memorize these football betting tips to earn huge sums of money!

A – All-Star. It’s the NHL All-Star Game in Dallas this week. No one watches hockey when it is full of hits, fights and all the fun body contact, so why in the world would people watch it when the players aren’t touching each other?

B – Bush, Reggie. The 88-yard run was as impressive as you expect from this super freak. He sure made it clear that he isn’t yet a mature man, though, didn’t he? Do you think that that front flip into the end zone pissed the Chicago defense off, or was it just a coincidence that those were the last points New Orleans scored?

C – Crosby, Sidney. I know I dwell on this guy, but the Pittsburgh forward will get more attention than anyone else at the NHL All-Star Game. Remember, he’s only 19 years old, so he’s only going to get better than he is, and he’s amazing already. If you haven’t seen him play, do yourself a favor and catch a Penguins game.

D – Drew Brees. This guy can put up huge numbers even when he’s looking pretty average. Seeing he ended up with 354 yards passing was surprising to me. If I was a Saints fan I would be concerned about this game and the four others that the team lost this year when Brees passed for more than 340 yards.

E – Eastern Washington. The Eagles are just 10-10 and are very unlikely to make the tournament. It’s too bad because their star guard, Rodney Stuckey, is as exciting to watch as any player in the country. He leads his conference in points and steals, and is second in assists. If he made the tournament then more people would be able to see how good he is.

F – Floyd Mayweather Sr. Oscar De La Hoya’s trainer wants an unprecedented $2 million payoff or he won’t train the Golden Boy for his next fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. I hope Oscar doesn’t pay him, because I am already sick to death of hearing about how father and son don’t get along.

G – Grossman, Rex. I can’t believe I am defending Grossman, but his performance Sunday was better than the numbers say it was. He protected the ball, he didn’t make a lot of mistakes, he threw it away when he had to, he made big plays like the pass to Berrian, and his team won by 25. The Super Bowl will not be about Rex Grossman – he’ll be fine.

H – Huh? We all know the story – Indy is an offensive team with iffy defense, while Chicago is all about defense with a lousy offense. Points scored per game in the playoffs for the Colts – 25.3. Bears – 33. Points allowed by the Colts – 16. Bears – 19. Everything is upside down.

I – Insurance policy. Colt Brennan had better call his State Farm agent and buy a massive policy on his arm. The Hawaii QB is coming back for his senior season despite being virtually guaranteed of being a first round pick in the draft. That’s great news for bettors – Hawaii will be an attractive bet and an over play again.

J – Jeff Samardzija. The Notre Dame receiver was a likely first round NFL pick, but he decided to give up football and sign with the Chicago Cubs as a pitcher instead. Maybe he can pull a Bo Jackson or a Deion Sanders and play both sports. Or, since he’s now a Cubs’ pitcher, maybe he’ll get recurring arm injuries and fail to live up to his potential.

K – Kurt Thomas. The Phoenix big man’s absence last year was a big reason the Suns didn’t go further in the playoffs. Now Thomas has gone down with an elbow injury and will miss six weeks. So far the team has kept winning, but could this have a serious impact on the unbeatable Suns?

L – Losses. There were some bad losses in college basketball this week. Pitt did not look like a Final Four squad in losing to Marquette. Kansas frustrated their fans, like they are so good at doing, by losing a game that shouldn’t have been close to Texas Tech. LSU was completely and utterly humiliated by Arkansas.

M – Melo. Denver’s superstar comes back from his 15-game suspension on Monday. The difference is that when he left he was the Nuggets’ only superstar, but now he has to share the spotlight with Allen Iverson. His first few games will take some serious handicapping.

N – New York Knicks. It seems very hard to believe, but the Knicks are actually playing some fairly decent basketball. They are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games. Maybe Isiah Thomas isn’t such a terrible coach after all. No, he really is, but this proves that any team can win a few in the pathetic East.

O – Outdoors. Thanks to the Saints, dome teams have now lost the last 10 conference championship games that they have played outdoors. If the weather is that much of a factor to these teams then you really have to wonder why Saints coach Sean Payton had his team practice indoors all week.

P – Peyton Manning. I still can’t stand the guy, but I’m man enough to give a guy respect when he deserves it. Good job. Excellent clutch second half performance. Congratulations. It must be a relief to finally win your first big game in your 30-plus years of life.

Q – Quite useless. I’ve always been curious – what happens to all of the ‘Saints NFC Champion’ and ‘New England AFC Champion’ shirts that obviously didn’t get worn? I think they get shredded up and made into Field Turf.

R – Reche Caldwell. Ugly game for the Patriots receiver who was playing so well in recent weeks. He might want to stay out of Boston for a while because he won’t be too popular there. He made several mistakes, none as costly as dropping the pass that was right on his hands when the nearest defender was about 100 miles away.

S – Serena Williams. It’s been a long time since you have been able to get value betting on a Williams sister, but Serena’s surprisingly solid performance in Australia this week is turning some heads and fattening some wallets.

T – Two halves. I put this here in case Bill Belichick reads this. Bill – football games have two halves. You win more if you make your game show up for both of them. I thought you were a genius coach. What happened?

U – Utley, Chase. The Philadelphia Phillies’ second baseman signed a 7 year, $85 million contract, meaning that the infield, except for third base, should look the same (Howard, Rollins, Utley) for a long time. Now if only the Phillies could find a way to quit sucking. They were a terrible team to bet on, especially at home.

V – Vick, Michael. It sounds like Vick is going to be exonerated over water-bottle-gate, but it’s still stunning that a guy like him gets into as much trouble as he does. If I was new Falcons coach Bobby Petrino, I don’t think I’d be too sad if Vick found a new home. The Raiders would be a good fit – he could relate intellectually with the morons in the ridiculous costumes.

W – Wild run. It might be a bit early for you to get excited about the Kentucky Derby, but you might want to remember the name Tiago. The horse is the brother of Giacomo, the 2005 Derby winner, and he won a wild and crazy but impressive race Sunday at Santa Anita. He is incredibly raw, but he sure looks talented.

X – Xavier. Two games for the Musketeers this week. A push in a six-point win against UMass, and an ugly loss as favorites at St. Joseph’s. Rough week. The saving grace is that they are in the midst of a nice streak of five overs in six games.

Y – Youth movement. Hiring 35-year-old coach Eric Mangini worked out well for the Jets this year, so now young coaches are cool in the NFL. Mike Tomlin, the new Steelers’ boss is 34. The Raiders offered their job to a 32-year-old (he wisely declined). Soon, the head coaches will be younger than the rookies.

Z – Zero. The number of touchdowns I would have guessed that linemen would score in the AFC championship. I would have missed it by three. Bizarre.

Betting the Super Bowl Total

I have spent most of the last week scratching my head trying to figure out what to do with the Super Bowl total. The problem is that I can see good arguments for both sides of the number. The total is at 48.5 right now, and it doesn’t seem as of now that the bookies have much interest in moving very far from that number.

Thursday’s French Open Betting

Thursday’s French Open Betting

This Thursday sees the fifth day’s action at Roland Garros and BetRepublic.com is previewing some of the biggest second round matches being played. Who will progress to round three and where does the betting value lie? Read on to find out.

Men’s TournamentTennis Betting Odds :

I’ll be focusing on four men’s matches featuring four of the top ten seeds in Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer. Can these top seeded players advance to the next stage of the tournament?

Nadal is a 1/200 to win the match against his Argentine opponent, Horacio Zeballos, who can be backed at 25/1 to defeat the second seed. Nadal is my pick to win the tournament outright and after disposing of Gianni Mina 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round I do not feel that he will have any problems against the world number forty-four in round two. It took Zeballos five sets to get past world 190 Martin Fischer, so I cannot see anything but a straight sets win for Nadal. Back this at odds of 1/8.

The second player we are looking at is Serbian Novak Djokovic. The number three seed took four sets to get past world number seventy-three Evgeny Korolev in the first round and now faces world number 246 Kei Nishikori for a place in round three. The Serbian is a 1/20 favourite to progress, while his Japanese opponent can be backed at 8/1 after beating Santiago Giraldo in round one. Djokovic outranks Nishikori by 243 places and I cannot see him dropping a set in this round, so back a straight sets win at odds of 4/11.

Seventh and ninth seed Verdasco and Ferrer strolled through the first round, dropping just six and five games respectively. In round two they face Frenchman Florent Serra and Belgian Xavier Malisse respectively. As I said in the Day Three preview these two players are my dark horse bets for the tournament and I feel that both players will progress easily through this round. Verdasco can be backed at 1/10 to win the match compared to 11/2 for Serra. Verdasco defeated Igor Kunitsyn 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 to reach this point of the competition while Serra dropped just five sets in eliminating Michael Russell of the USA.

These two players have met on five previous occasions, with Verdasco winning the last four matches. He has won the last three matches in straight sets and has not dropped a set against Serra on clay, including beating him at Roland Garros last year. I feel that the seventh seed and world number nine will win in straight sets again, so back him to do so at 4/7. Shockingly, despite David Ferrer being seventy-three places higher in the ATP rankings than Xavier Malisse, the Belgian leads the Spaniard 2-1 in their head-to-head encounters. However, Ferrer did win their last meeting and that came in 2005. Ferrer has improved exponentially since then and is a massive favourite to progress in this match at 1/12 compared to 10/1 for his opponent. Both players won their first round games in straight sets and I see this one being a 3-0 win too. My money is on a Ferrer win in straight sets at 4/7 .

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

Back Rafael Nadal to win 3-0 @ 1/8

Back Novak Djokovic to win 3-0 @ 4/11

Back Fernando Verdasco to win 3-0 @ 4/7

Back David Ferrer to win 3-0 @ 4/7

Women’s Tournament – Tennis Betting Tips:

Some of our picks for the Women’s Tournament in the Outright Preview are in action today and we’re previewing games featuring two of the top four seeds in Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic as well as two players in red hot form in Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova.

Top seed Serena Williams has never really gone that well on the clay courts of Roland Garros and her return of just one victory at this Grand Slam is poor for her standards. She defeated Stefanie Voegele in straight sets in the first round, although she was taken to a tie breaker in the first set, and now faces Julia Goerges of Germany in the second round. Unsurprisingly, the top seed and world number one is a huge odds to win the match at 1/12 versus her opponents 6/1.

Goerges is ranked seventy-seven in the world but she managed to overcome fifty-eighth ranked Melinda Czink in straight sets first time out, but I don’t see her going any further. However, clay is not Serena’s favourite surface and I see the match ending 2-1 to Serena, so back this outcome at odds of 9/2 .

Jelena Jankovic was my pick to win the women’s title and she looked good as she rolled over Alicia Molik 6-0, 6-4 in the first round. Her opponent in round two is Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, who overcame Pauline Parmentier 6-3, 6-1. These players have met only once before, in Dubai last year, and it was the Estonian who emerged victorious. She is priced at 9/2 to win again, while Jankovic is 1/8 to even up the scorecard. However, I feel that Jankovic is in excellent form and will take an easy over the player ranked 114 places below her in the WTA rankings list. Back a 2-0 win for Jankovic at 2/5.

The two outsiders are also in fine form with Justine Henin having won 6-4, 6-3 and Maria Sharapova having triumphed 6-3, 6-2 in their first round matches. In the second round Henin will face Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, who defeated Katarina Srebotnik in three sets in the first round, and the Belgian is the massive favourite at 1/25 to make progress towards her fifth French Open title, while her Czech opponent can be backed at 9/1. Henin loves the clay, having won four Roland Garros titles and I see a straight sets win for her here. My money will be going at 1/8 for a 2-0 Henin victory.

Sharapova’s defeat of Ksenia Pervak was a continuation of the form she showed in Strasbourg last weekend and should she continue like this then her second round opponent Kirsten Flipkens will be facing a straight sets loss too. Sharapova is an odds 1/7 to win the match while Flipkens of Belgium is available at 4/1. Unfortunately for the Belgian I can see nothing but a straight sets win here, so back Sharapova at 4/9 to win 2-0.

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

Back Serena Williams to win 2-1 @ 9/2

Back Jelena Jankovic to won 2-0 @ 2/5

Back Justine Henin to win 2-0 @ 1/8

Back Maria Sharapova to win 2-0 @ 4/9

FRENCH OPEN BETTING ? WOMEN’S SEMI FINALS

Day twelve at Roland Garros sees the Semi Final matches between the final four players left in the Women’s tournament. Who will be playing in Saturday’s final? BetRepublic.com previews both matches here:

Elena Dementieva v Francesca Schiavone Tennis Betting:

The bookmakers are having a hard time determining who will be the player that progresses to the French Open final with both PaddyPower.com and William Hill having odds of 5/6 for both Dementieva and Schiavone to win the match. It looks like it’ll be a close match, but will it be the fifth or seventeenth seed that progresses to the final?

After a relatively easy route through the tournament, Dementieva came across Nadia Petrova in the Quarter Finals. Petrova had defeated Venus Williams in round four and started the Quarter Final match with great confidence and won the first set in an injury broken sixty-two minutes. From there, however, things went downhill for the nineteenth seed as Dementieva got into her stride and won the next two sets 6-2, 6-0 to book her Semi Final place. She will need to perform like she did in those final two sets to progress to the final, but will Dementieva be able to?

Schiavone is the first Grand Slam semi finalist from Italy since the Open era began and she has claimed this feat in style. She has beaten three seeded players on route to the final four, Na Li (11) in round three, Maria Kirilenko (30) in round four and Caroline Wozniacki (3) in the Quarters. More impressive than that is the fact that bar dropping her first set of the tournament she has won the following ten sets to reach the Semi Finals. She is clearly the player in the better form of the two, but can she reach the final?

This will be the eleventh meeting of the two players, with Dementieva holding a 6-4 advantage on the scorecard. Dementieva has won the last three encounters and Schiavone’s last victory against the Russian came in 2007. Also, they have met just once on clay with Dementieva emerging victorious. Despite this I feel that Schiavone will add another victory to her previous four wins against Dementieva as her form at Roland Garros has been exceptional so far. My money will be on Francesca Schiavone to beat Elena Dementieva at odds of 5/6.

Jelena Jankovic v Samantha Stosur Tennis Betting Tips:

After beating Justine Henin and Serena Williams in the last two rounds, it is unsurprising that Samantha Stosur is the favourite with William Hill at odds of 8/13 to reach the final of the French Open. My pre-tournament favourite Jelena Jankovic is available at 6/5. Who will be right, me or the bookies?

Of the two players Jankovic has had the easier route to this point in the tournament and has only had to defeat the twenty-third and twenty-seventh seeds in rounds three and four. Unsurprisingly she has dropped just the one set on the way to the final four and that came against Kaia Kanepi in the second round.

Stosur, on the other hand, has beaten the top seed in Serena Williams in the Quarter Finals and the four time winner of the French Open in Justine Henin in round four. Henin started off the stronger of the two in their match and won the first set 6-2 in thirty-two minutes before Stosur won the next two sets 6-1, 6-4 to book her place in the last eight of the competition. Filled with confidence from beating Henin she raced off into a 6-2, 5-3 lead before Serena came back and won the second set in a tie-breaker. The final set was nip and tuck until the very end when Stosur broke Williams at 7-6 and won the match 6-2, 6-7, 8-6 in what was an epic game. Can she carry on from there and book her place in the final?

These two players have met on four previous occasions and Jankovic has won three compared to Stosur’s single win. All four matches have been played on hard courts and they have met twice this year with the score tied at 1-1, with Stosur winning the last game in Miami. None of their four matches have gone to three sets, but I feel that this one will with Stosur in the form of her life and highly confident after her last two victories. Unfortunately for her I am sticking with my original prediction of Jankovic to win the title, so I’ll be backing her at odds of 6/5 to win this match. I’ll also be putting a small bet on Jankovic to win 2-1 @ 7/2 with PaddyPower.com.

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

•    Francesca Schiavone to beat Elena Dementieva @ 5/6

•    Jelena Jankovic to beat Samantha Stosur @ 6/5

•    Jelena Jankovic to win 2-1 @ 7/2

Tennis Betting Tips ? In 2009 Yet So Far for Rafael Nadal

At the start of 2009 tennis betting tips, many thought that Rafael Nadal was set to dominate world tennis after the way he won the Australian Open, beating Roger Federer in an epic five-set final.

However, a knee injury then played its part in his shocking fourth-round defeat at the French Open, and he was not able to defend his titles at Queens and Wimbledon.

Nadal made his comeback at the Montreal Masters 1000 Event and reached the quarterfinals, where he lost to the eventual runner-up Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina.

The following week, Nadal made the semifinals of the Masters 1000 Event in Cincinnati, where he lost to the Serb Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniard then reached the semifinals of the US Open for the second time in as many years, but was blown apart by an inspired del Potro, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

To top it off, this weekend, Nadal reached the finals of the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai, but was beaten by Nikolay Davydenko, 7-6, 6-3.

Since Nadals comeback tennis betting odds , he may not have won a title, but a Masters 1000 final and semi appearance, as well as a last four showing at the US Open, prove that it has been a case of so near, yet so far for Rafa in 2009.

If Nadal can find his best form , then he could yet upset the tennis betting tips and win the Masters Cup in London next month

French Open Women’s Final Tennis Betting

This Saturday sees the final day’s action for the ladies at Roland Garros as Francesca Schiavone takes on Samantha Stosur in a surprise final. Who will emerge with their first Grand Slam victory? BetRepublic.com previews the action here.

Francesca Schiavone v Samantha Stosur Tennis Betting:

Both of these players have been the surprise packages of the tournament, with Schiavone becoming the first Italian to reach a Grand Slam semi final, and now final, in the Open era while Stosur has beaten four time winner Justine Henin and world number one Serena Williams on route to the final. PaddyPower.com have made Stosur a 2/9 favourite to claim the title ahead of 13/4 for Schiavone, mainly down to whom she has beaten and the fact that she is unbeaten against Schiavone since 2005. Will that run continue or will Schiavone become the first Italian to win a Grand Slam?

In her last three matches Stosur has had to overcome four time winner Justine Henin in round four, world number one Serena Williams in the Quarter Finals and the fourth seed, and my pre-tournament favourite for the title, Jelena Jankovic in the Semis. Stosur took three sets to get past both Henin and Serena, but she completely blew Jankovic away with a 6-1, 6-2 win to book her place in her first ever Grand Slam final. Can she continue in this form to claim the 2010 French Open title?

Schiavone has beaten seeded players in her last four matches, with three of those matches being against players seeded above her. The seventeenth seed defeated Na Li (11) in round three, Maria Kirilenko (30) in the fourth round, Caroline Wozniacki (3) in the Quarter Finals and Elena Dementieva (5) in the last four. She won the first three of those matches in straight sets with the semi final match against Dementieva going on for just one set as Dementieva retired with a calf injury after losing the set 7-6. In fact, apart from the first set of her first match, Schiavone has not dropped a set on her run to the final. Can she keep that going and make history as the first Italian to win a Grand Slam in the Open era?

These two players have met on five previous occasions and Stosur leads the scorecard 4-1. The Australian has won the last four matches and Schiavone’s only win came in 2005. Of their five previous matches two have been on clay and Stosur has won both of these in straight sets, including beating Schiavone in the first round of the 2009 French Open. However, I feel that things will be different this time around with both players in highly confident moods after their exceptional runs to this point. Who will win though? Despite Schiavone having lost just one set in six matches at Roland Garros this year I feel that Stosur has had the more difficult run in terms of matches, if not opponents, and she has had to dig deeper to get the results and this will have her better prepared for whatever may happen in the final. I don’t expect Schiavone to make it easy for her though, so my money is on a 2-1 Stosur win at odds of 16/5 with William Hill.

BetRepublic.com Recommends Tennis Betting Tips:

•    Back Samantha Stosur to win the French Open by beat Francesca Schiavone 2-1 @ 16/5

FRENCH OPEN BETTING – WOMEN’S SEMI FINALS

Tuesday’s French Open Betting : Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling Live Odds

Tuesday’s French Open Betting : Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling Live Odds

Tuesday sees the tenth day’s action at Roland Garros and we’re down to the final eight in both the Men’s and Women’s draws. Who will make the Semi Finals? BetRepublic.com previews all of the day’s matches here.

Men’s Tournament:

The two Men’s Quarter Final matches being played today see top seed Roger Federer take on fifth seed Robin Soderling in the first match and fifteenth seed Tomas Berdych faces eleventh seed Mikhail Youzhny in match two. Who will progress to the final four?

Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling Tennis Betting Odds:

This match will be the thirteenth meeting between these two players and Federer, the world number one, is currently undefeated in their previous twelve encounters. Of those twelve matches, three have been played on clay and Federer has won all three in straight sets, including last year’s French Open final. Can Soderling record his first win against the Swiss legend this time around?

Federer a massive favourite to win the match at odds of 2/9 with Soderling available at 3/1. Federer has also won all four matches at Roland Garros this year in straight sets, with only Alejandra Falla of Columbia coming close to winning a set in Federer’s first three matches. Federer defeated twentieth seed Stanislas Wawrinka in round four and he pushed Federer to his second tie breaker of the tournament before ultimately losing in straight sets also. Will Federer claim another straight sets win and take another step towards defending his title?

The world number seven and fifth seed Soderling has dropped just one set on his way to the Quarter Finals, and that came in round three against twenty-ninth seed Albert Montanes. In his two matches before that he had dropped just seven games in his six sets. He defeated Montanes 3-1 in the third round before disposing of tenth seed Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 to book his place in the last eight against an opponent he has never beaten. Can he change that statistic today?

Were Soderling to face anyone else in this tournament, including Rafael Nadal, I would not hesitate to back him to progress to the last four stage with the form that he has shown in the last week.

However, Federer seems to be one step, if not two steps, ahead of the Swede in every match they have played and I feel that he will progress to the Semi Finals. Soderling will prove to be Federer’s toughest opponent so far and I feel he will take one set from Federer, so back Federer to win the match 3-1 @ 5/2

Tomas Berdych vs Mikhail Youzhny Tennis Betting Tips :

After defeating Andy Murray in round four, world number seventeen, Tomas Berdych the favourite to progress to the final four at odds of 8/15 compared to 6/4 for eleventh seed and world number fourteen Mikhail Youzhny. This will be the eleventh meeting of the two players, with Youzhny leading 6-4, can Berdych justify his favourite status and move into the last four?

Berdych has won all of his previous four matches in this year’s competition in straight sets, however he dropped ten games in both of his first two matches before warming to clay against seventeenth seed John Isner in round three with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 victory. Following that impressive performance he defeated fourth seed Murray 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 to book his place in the last eight.

Youzhny began his tournament well with a 6-1, 6-0, 6-4 victory over Michal Przysiezny in the first round, but he managed to drop a set in each of his following matches against Lukas Lacko and Viktor Troicki in the second and third rounds before progressing to the Quarter Finals when eighth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired from their fourth round match. Clearly Berdych has been in the better form in recent matches, but does that mean he can progress against this well known foe?

Of their ten previous encounters, just two have been played on clay and the scoreline for this surface is 1-1, with Berdych winning their last encounter in the final of the Munich Open in 2009. They played four matches in 2009, with the year ending two wins each, but have not played in 2010 and both players will be desperate to win and progress to the final four section of the tournament. With his recent form I feel that it will be Tomas Berdych who progresses, but he has only defeated Youzhny in straight sets once so I am splitting my stakes on Berdych to win 3-1 @ 11/4 and 3-2 @ 5/1.

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

Back Roger Federer to beat Robin Soderling 3-1 @ 5/2

Split your stakes on Tomas Berdych to beat Mikhail Youzhny 3-1 @ 11/4 and 3-2 @ 5/1

Women’s Tournament:

The two women’s Quarter Final matches on Day Ten see seventeenth seed Francesca Schiavone take on third seed Caroline Wozniacki and fifth seed Elena Dementieva face nineteenth seed Nadia Petrova. Who will book their Semi Final places?

Francesca Schiavone vs Caroline Wozniacki:

Caroline Wozniacki, the world number three, the favourite to progress to the Semi Final stage of the tournament at odds of 4/7 ahead of world number seventeen Schiavone at odds of 5/4 despite Schiavone having won their only previous encounter. Will Wozniacki level the scorecard and progress to the final four stage?

Wozniacki has played well so far at Roland Garros and she dispatched her first three opponents barely breaking a sweat.

First up was Alla Kudryavtseva, who was sent packing 6-0, 6-3, followed by Tathiana Garbin, who was beaten 6-3, 6-1, and finally thirty-first seed Alexandra Dulgheru, who lost 6-3, 6-4. However, the Danish 19 year old came up against fourteenth seed Flavia Pennetta in round four and she proved to be more of a challenge and caused Wozniacki to drop her first set. The third seed booked her place in the Quarter Finals with a hard fought 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 victory. This year is already her best performance in the French Open, having never progressed further than round three before, now can she get to the final four?

Bar a slow start in which she lost the first set of her first match, Francesca Schiavone has performed impeccably so far. In that first round game she lost the first set 7-5 to Regina Kulikova before winning the next two sets 6-3, 6-4 to progress to round two and she has not looked back since.

She dropped just four games in her defeat of Sophie Ferguson in round two before beating eleventh seed Na Li 6-4, 6-2 to book her fourth round spot. In round four she defeated thirtieth seed Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-4 to find herself in the last eight of the French Open. Can the Italian keep her excellent performances coming and progress to the Semi Finals?

Despite being ranked third in the world Wozniacki’s performances can be hit and miss on clay and while she has performed well so far this may be the end of the line if Schiavone can continue to play the way she has played in the last week. Also, Schiavone knows how to beat her, having defeated the Dane in Zurich in 2008. Wozniacki has made vast improvements since then and she will not be easily defeated, but I feel that she will lose this one. My money is on Francesca Schiavone to win the match at odds of 6/4.

Elena Dementieva v Nadia Petrova Tennis Betting System:

This match sees the fifth seed, in Dementieva, take on Petrova, the nineteenth seed, who caused a massive shock in the fourth round by eliminating second seed Venus Williams from proceedings. Despite this shock result, Dementieva the favourite to win the match at odds of 8/13 compared to 6/5 for Petrova. Who will progress to the Semi Final stage?

Of the two players, the fifth seed has had an easier route to the Quarter Finals by a long way, but has made it seem more difficult than her opponent. Dementieva, from Russia, dropped just two games in her first round thumping of Petra Martic before beating Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2, 7-6 in round two. On reaching the third round she came from behind to beat Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak before cruising past Chanelle Scheepers to book her spot in the last eight.

In contrast Petrova dropped just six games in her first and second round matches against Shuai Zhang and Agnes Szavay before coming from behind to beat home favourite and fifteenth seed Aravane Rezai in an epic match. Rezai won the first set 7-6 and Petrova won the second and third sets 6-4, 10-8 in a match that lasted just under three hours. In round four she powered past Venus Williams 6-3, 6-4 in ninety minutes to book a Quarter Final spot against Dementieva, whom she has faced on fourteen previous occasions.

The scorecard currently reads 7-7 after their previous fourteen encounters that go back as far as 1997. Dementieva has won the last four matches that they have played, however they have not played since the Tour Championships in 2008. Petrova will be highly confident after beating Venus Williams in the last round and, although she has been eliminated at the Quarter Final stage of all three previous clay court tournaments she has entered in 2010, I feel that she will be victorious in this match.

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

Back Francesca Schiavone to beat Caroline Wozniacki @ 6/4

Back Nadia Petrov to beat Elena Dementieva @ 6/5

Tuesday’s French Open Betting

Tuesday’s French Open Betting – Tennis Betting Tips

Day three at Roland Garros sees more first round action in both the Men’s and Women’s competitions. In this article we’ll be looking to get some value bets from some of the top named players, so read on for our take on the third day’s action.

Men’s Tournament:

There are several big named players kicking off their tournament today with Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer looking to start off their challenges with victory. Nadal begins against Frenchman Gianni Mina and is widely expected to win the match in straight sets. Nadal at 1/500 to win the match and 1/16 to win the match without conceding a set. I can see nothing to argue with this and the world number two should see off the world number 655 without issue.

Roddick will play his first match on clay in 2010 against Finnish world number 69 Jarkko Nieminen. Despite withdrawing from the Masters 1000 events in Rome and Madrid, sixth seed Roddick is the favourite to win the match @ 3/10. Nieminen is the outsider at 12/5 to progress to round two with good reason as he has spent a large portion of this season out injured and has lost his one and only match on clay this year. However, as Roddick has not played on clay in 2010 I expect Nieminen to win at least one set, so I suggest splitting your stakes on Roddick to win 3-1 @ 12/5 and 3-2 @ 13/2.

Verdasco and Ferrer were my dark horse picks in my Outright Preview article, how will they get on against Igor Kunitsyn and David Guez in their first round matches? Verdasco is a 1/20 favourite to progress against Kunitsyn, who is available at 8/1. These two players have met once before with the world number nine triumphing in straight sets at the 2008 US Open against Kunitsyn, who is ranked 103 in the world. Verdasco has won three titles on clay this year and has won eighteen of his twenty-three clay matches, while his opponent has won just two of eight matches this year and has lost his only match on clay in Bordeaux. I see this going the way of their last meeting so back Verdasco to win 3-0 @ 4/9.

Ferrer is another player going well on clay this year, having won twenty-seven of thirty-two clay games in 2010, and is a massive favourite to reach the second round at odds of 1/33 compared to 10/1. Guez is ranked 136 in the world and has failed to win any of his four matches on the ATP and has lost six of ten on Challenger Tour. I cannot see him getting anything against a man at the top of his game, so back Ferrer to win 3-0 @ 1/4.

BetRepublic  Recommends:

Back Rafael Nadal to win 3-0 @ 1/16

Split stakes on Andy Roddick to win 3-1 @ 12/5 and 3-2 @ 13/2

Back Fernando Verdasco to win 3-0 @ 4/9

Back David Ferrer to win 3-0 @ 1/4

Women’s Tournament:

We’ll be focusing on three matches in the women’s draw, with all three games featuring former world number one players in Justine Henin, Dinara Safina and Maria Sharapova. Four time French Open champion Justine Henin starts her tournament against Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova. The pair have met on three previous occasions, with Henin winning all three matches and dropping just one set in the process.

Henin is the favourite to claim the 2010 ten title and because of this, coupled with her excellent record against Pironkova, she is a massive favourite to win the match at 1/18 . Her opponent can be backed at 7/1 if you fancy an upset. I don’t and I feel that Henin will stroll to round two in straight sets. She can be backed at 1/4 to win 2-0 and that’s where my money will be.

Former world number one Dinara Safina kicks off her title challenge against Kimiko Date Krumm from Japan. Neither player goes into the match well prepared as Safina has lost three of her four matches on clay this season and suffered first round exits in Rome and Madrid in her last two tournaments, while her opponent retired from Estoril two weeks ago with a calf strain which kept her out of action last week.

Despite her poor form on clay in 2010 Safina is the favourite to win this match at odds of 3/10 compared to 12/5 for the number seventy-two in the world. I would not back Safina at those odds as her form is terrible and I’m going to the first major upset and go with Kimiko Date Krumm to defeat Safina at 12/5 with

Finally we’re taking a look at how Maria Sharapova will do in her first round match. She faces the number 110 in the world Ksenia Pervak and she will be a confident mood after winning the Strasbourg Open last weekend.

That was her second ever clay title and she will be looking to carry over that form to the only Grand Slam tournament that she has not won. As a result of her recent form and the fact that Pervak has spent the season playing on the ITF Tour Sharapova is a major favourite to win this game at odds of 1/8 compared to 9/2 for her opponent . I cannot see anything but a straight sets win for Sharapova in this match and being as you can get odds of 2/5 on this eventuality that is where my money will be going.

BetRepublic Tennis Betting Odds Recommends:

Justine Henin to beat Tsvetana Pironkova 2-0 @ 1/4

Kimiko Date Krumm to beat Dinara Safina @ 12/5

Maria Sharapova to defeat Ksenia Pervak 2-0 @ 2/5

On Thursday at Stanford University, in the 2nd round of the Bank of the West Classic, 27-year-old top-seeded #2 Serena Williams from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, defeated 26-year-old #52 Melinda Czink from Budapest, Hungary (with a 2nd residence in New York, New York), 6-3, 7-6(7) (photo shown).

Serena said: “I was just off today, and really I’ve been off this whole week. Hopefully I can get on track. In the second set, I just wanted to focus on winning the next point. I made some key errors, although it was good that I ended up winning that sixth game [during the second set] because it helped me at the end…

“[Melinda] served really well, toward the end especially, and started mixing it up and serving big. I definitely could have returned better, but this was still good practice… I would have been fine going three sets. I thought I desperately needed to hold, that way if we did go to three sets, I would at least start out serving. I would have definitely been into it and ready.” tourney quotes.

In the Stanford quarterfinals on Friday, Serena will play 25-year-old #21 Samantha Stosur from Gold Coast, Australia. They have met only twice before, both times on hardcourts. In the 2nd round of the Beijing Olympics last year, Serena defeated Samantha 6-2, 6-0. But early this year, in the 1st round in Sydney, the score was much closer, as Serena won 6-3, 6(4)-7, 7-5.

Serena said: “[Samantha] has improved by leaps and bounds, and I just hope I can stay in the match. Hopefully I will be playing a little better tomorrow.”

Wednesday’s French Open Tennis Betting

This Wednesday sees the eleventh day’s action at Roland Garros and the second group of four Quarter Final matches will be played. Who will progress to the Semi Finals? BetRepublic.com previews all four games here.

Men’s Tournament Tennis Betting:

Today’s action from the Men’s draw sees the second and third seeds, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, battle it out against two players that I did not expect to do so well at Roland Garros in Nicolas Almagro and Jurgen Melzer. Who will be playing the last four stage of the competition?

Rafael Nadal v Nicolas Almagro:

Unsurprisingly, William Hill have made Nadal, the world number two, a massive favourite, at odds of 1/25, to defeat his fellow countryman and world number twenty-one, who is available at 9/1. It is not surprising as Nadal has won all six previous meetings between the two players and is in stunning form on the clay courts in Paris. Will Nadal claim another win against Almagro and progress to the Semi Finals?

Nadal is at home on clay and he has looked it in this year’s competition so far and he has won all four matches without dropping a set. Gianni Mina fell in the first round 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 before Horacio Zeballos lost 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in round two. Nadal then faced twenty-eighth seed Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in round three before disposing of twenty-fourth seed Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to book his place in the last eight of the competition. Nadal was 4/9 to win the 2010 French Open before the tournament began and they look like long odds with his displays so far, will he rack up another straight sets win?

Almagro started his tournament off slowly and went to five sets to defeat world number 205 Robin Haase before beating both Steve Darcis in round two and Alexandr Dolgopolov Jr in round three in straight sets. In the fourth round the Spaniard defeated one of my dark horse tips in Fernando Verdasco, dropping just one set in the process. Can he cause a second, and larger, upset in the Quarter Finals?

Nadal will not fear Almagro, having never lost to him and having beaten him on clay at last month’s Madrid Masters. Nadal has dropped a set in the last two encounters between the two players but he has not dropped a set against Almagro in a Grand Slam match, including beating him 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 at the Quarter Final stage of the 2008 French Open. I feel that Nadal is almost unbeatable at the moment and he will win in straight sets, so back him to do so at odds of 4/9 with PaddyPower.com.

Novak Djokovic v Jurgen Melzer:

This match sees the third seed take on the twenty-second seed and William Hill have made the third seed, Djokovic, a large favourite to progress at odds of 1/4. Melzer is an 11/4 outsider to progress at the expense of the Serbian, but can the Austrian cause another shock?

Melzer has dropped just two sets on route to a Quarter Final place, with the first set dropped against Nicolas Mahut in round two and the second against Teimuraz Gabashvili in round four. His best performance came in the third round, where he defeated ninth seed David Ferrer 6-4, 6-0, 7-6. Can he put in a similar performance against the world number three for a place in the final four?

Djokovic has not had the best of years on clay and of his four matches so far at Roland Garros he has only won one in straight sets, with his first, third and fourth round matches all going to four sets. Djokovic has also had a fairly easy run of things so far, with thirty-first seed Victor Hanescu in the third round being only seeded player that Djokovic has faced on his run to the last eight. Can Djokovic justify his ranking as third seed and progress to the final four?

On the previous two occasions that these players have met Djokovic has emerged victorious, however these players have never met on clay before now. Melzer is having a better time on clay this season than Djokovic, who is ranked twenty-four places higher in the ATP rankings and I feel that Melzer will cause another shock and be playing in the Semi Finals. Back him to do so at odds of 11/4 with William Hill.

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

•    Back Rafael Nadal to win 3-0 @ 4/9

•    Back Jurgen Melzer to beat Novak Djokovic @ 11/4

Women’s Tournament Tennis Betting Tips:

Today’s action in the Women’s draw sees the top seed take on the seventh seed and my pre-tournament favourite take on an surprise addition to the final eight. Who will join Elena Dementieva and Francesca Schiavone in the Semi Finals?

Serena Williams v Samantha Stosur:

This match will be the fifth occasion that Williams, the top seed and world number one, and Stosur, the world number seven and seventh seed, will face each other in a competitive match. Williams leads 3-1 after their previous four matches but they have never faced each other on clay and Stosur has just eliminated the pre-tournament favourite of Justine Henin. Who will be playing the Semis?

Serena has played pretty well so far in the tournament this year and she has dropped just one set in her four matches. Stefanie Voegele was her first victim and was dispatched 7-6, 6-2 before Julia Goerges was beaten 6-1, 6-1 in round two. In round three Serena eliminated the twenty-ninth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 thumping of eighteenth seed Shahar Peer to book her place in the last eight. Of the nine times that Serena has played at Roland Garros she has been eliminated at the Quarter Final stage four times and has only passed this point twice, will she go out at the last eight stage again?

Samantha Stosur will be highly confident of claiming another scalp in this round after defeating Justine Henin in round four to book her place against Serena. The Australian has dropped just two sets on her way to the final eight, with one being dropped against Henin and she showed a weakness against Rossana De Los Rios, ranked 102 in the WTA rankings, by dropping a set in their second round match. After beating Henin can Stosur cause another shock?

PaddyPower.com do not believe that she can and they have made Serena Williams the favourite at odds of 2/5 compared to Stosur’s odds of 7/4.  Of their previous four meetings all have come on hard courts and they have never met on clay, which is not one of Serena’s favourite surfaces. As a result of this, and the confidence that she will have after her round four win, I am backing Samantha Stosur to eliminate Serena Williams.

Jelena Jankovic v Yaroslava Shvedova:

This match sees the world number four in Jankovic take on the world number thirty-six in their fourth ever meeting. PaddyPower.com have made Jankovic the favourite to progress to the final four stage at odds of 2/11 compared to 7/2 for Shvedova. Will the match go according to the odds?

Jankovic was my pre-tournament favourite to win the title and she has looked in excellent form in all four of her matches so far. She has dropped just one set, against Kaia Kanepi in round two, and eliminated Alona Bondarenko, the twenty-seventh seed, and Daniela Hantuchova, the twenty-third seed, in her last two matches. She has looked good on clay all of this year, but will there be a shock in this match?

Shvedova has also dropped just one set on her route to the last eight of the tournament and she has also eliminated two seeded players on the way. In the first round she disposed of Sara Errani 6-1, 7-5 before defeating eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-3 in round two. She followed that up with 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win over twenty-eighth seed Alisa Kleybanova before breezing by Jarmila Groth 6-4, 6-3 to book her place in the Quarter Finals.

These two players have met on three previous occasions, with Jankovic leading 2-1 on the scorecard. All three matches have been played on hard courts and all three matches have gone to three sets. Shvedova’s only win came at last year’s US Open, can she eliminate the world number four at another Grand Slam? I can’t see it happening but I see the match going to three sets again, so back a Jankovic 2-1 win at odds of 17/5 with William Hill.

BetRepublic.com Recommends:

•    Back Samantha Stosur to beat Serena Williams @ 7/4

•    Back Jelena Jankovic to win 2-1 @ 17/5

Betting Basics for Tennis

Betting Basics for Tennis

After learning about betting point spreads, our favorite newbie bettor Emily wanted to know about betting tennis. There are no point spreads in tennis because there is no meaningful way to measure how much a tennis player wins or loses by. In tennis, all that really matters is who wins and loses the match, and that’s where money line wagering comes into play. Following are tips on understanding tennis odds and betting tennis matches.

For example, Emily’s favorite tennis player Serena Williams wins a majority of her matches. The chances of winning for Serena’s opponent, let’s say the 102nd-ranked player in the world, would be less than 50-50 for this very reason.

Thus, sportsbooks would make bettors wager significantly more money on Serena than her opponent because of the disproportionate likelihood of Serena winning the match.

In the case of Serena Williams versus an overmatched opponent, a reasonable money line would require Serena bettors to risk $400 to win $100; while a $100 bet on her opponent would win $360.

Here’s how the money line would be listed: Serena Williams -400 / #102 Ranked Opponent +360

Every $400 bet on Serena nets a $100 profit if she wins (plus the return of the $400 risked). If her opponent pulls off the upset, $100 bet on the underdog would profit $360 (plus the return of the $100 risked). For more information on how this works, make sure to check out Reading and Understanding Money Lines.

Another popular way of betting tennis is picking the winner of each tournament before it starts. In fact, “Betting to Win” an outcome event like Wimbledon is the most common way to wager on tennis. Since tennis has multiple tournaments over the course of a year, “Betting to Win” obviously offers numerous wagering opportunities. It is very important to note that not all the competitors in a tennis tournament may be listed, so another tennis betting option is a “field” bet which includes all other competitors not listed.

The tennis odds on a “field” bet are typically comparable to a bet on the favorite in order to protect sportsbooks from taking a big hit if a major upset occurs. In exchange for a lesser payout, field bettors gain the advantage of having more than one entrant that can win for them. For example, the top 20 players going into a tournament might be listed with their own individual odds while the rest of the players are grouped together.

Some sportsbooks will also allow you to bet futures on the four major major tournaments, which is yet another way you can “Bet to Win” that can offer you appealing odds because you are betting far in advance of when the event takes place. For example, betting on the 2006 Australian Open now might get you much better value on Serena, who may be 10/1 at this moment but dip to 6/1 closer to the event if she is on fire. For more information on the value of betting golf futures, read How Future Bets Can Pay Off.

Before placing a future bet or any bet on any tennis player, it’s important to find out their strengths and weaknesses. Some tennis players perform better on different surfaces, and it must be noted that the French Open is played on clay and Wimbledon on grass. Playing on clay was the biggest weakness for Pete Sampras, arguably the best tennis player ever. He won 7 Wimbledon titles but never brought home a French championship. Fortunately for Sampras, he also performed well on a hardcourt surface (the most common), where he earned the other half of his 14 career Grand Slam tournament wins.

Other possibilities for betting tennis include proposition bets on the number of sets a match lasts. There are several advantages to betting at elite online sportsbooks but the very best will give you the most wagering opportunities, so it’s a good idea to shop around and find out what everybody has to offer.

If you are a knowledgeable tennis fan who has a good feel about how a match will likely turn out, then you should most definitely trust your insights and use them to find strong bets. For those of you with less experience, several sports web sites have power rankings for players which should give you a good idea of who’s hot on the tennis court and who’s not. Of course it’s up to you to decide which driver you want to bet on, but the more you learn about tennis, the more prepared you will be when placing your bet. Hopefully now you understand the basics of betting tennis and how tennis odds work!

Australian Open Betting

Andy Murray is one of the favorites on the men’s side, as he arrives at the Australian Open in the best shape of his professional career. Punters have taken notice and feel the Brit has a real shot at capturing his first Grand Slam.

One the women’s side, the Williams sisters have been pushed to the top of the group, but the field is pretty wide open. While Triple champion Serena is the odds on favorite, just ahead of her sister Venus, there are other strong contenders getting action as well, including the number one ranked women’s player in the world, Jelena Jankovic, as well as Ana Ivanovic and Russian pair Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva.

Serena will be trying to score her 10th Grand Slam title. Her sister Venus can boast seven Grand Slam wins, but has never won here.

It should be a great tournament with plenty of drama for bettors and fans alike.

Tennis Betting Tips – In 2009 Yet So Far for Rafael Nadal

Tennis Betting: The Chances Of A Federer Or Serena Slam

I believe this is a first for me, writing a tennis betting article. But while the Australian Open is still fresh in everyone’s minds, Bodog has provided odds on Roger Federer and Serena Williams winning the Grand Slam this season – of course both won the singles titles in Melbourne over the weekend and thus they are the only ones with the chance to pull off this rare feat.

How rare of a feat? Only five players have won all of tennis’ major tournaments in a calendar year: Don Budge (1938), Rod Laver (1962 and 1969), Maureen Connolly (1953), Margaret Smith-Court (1970) and Steffi Graf (1988). No Pete Sampras, no John McEnroe or Bjorn Borg, no Martina Navratilova or Chris Evert.

Thus the odds for Federer and Serena to win the Slam ware long at Bodog:

Federer +2000
S. Williams +6000

I’m actually a bit surprised that Federer’s odds are so much better. After all, it was just over a year ago that some thought Federer was on the way down in the men’s game when he lost to Rafael Nadal in the 2009 Aussie Open final. That followed a 2008 season in which Federer was finally beaten by Nadal at Wimbledon and a year in which the Swiss star won only one Grand Slam (the U.S. Open).

But it’s hard to argue Federer’s dominance of a men’s game that is deeper than it’s been in years. He has now played in 18 of the past 19 Grand Slam finals (23 straight semis) and won three of the past four. He is one of only three players in the Open era to have won the career Slam, joining Laver and Andre Agassi.

It’s an injury to Nadal that would seem to give Federer his best shot. It seems Nadal’s body is beginning to break down, and he hasn’t been the same since winning last year’s Australian Open. Nadal is down to fourth in the world and will miss a month with a knee injury that caused him to withdraw from his quarterfinal match against Andy Murray in Melbourne. Nadal has beaten only one Top 10 player since coming back from the knee injury that caused him to miss Wimbledon last year – and now that problem appears to have returned. His last title anywhere was in Rome last May at a French Open warm-up.

If Nadal isn’t right for the French Open in May, where he has been unbeatable when healthy, then Federer could definitely win all four majors this year because the clay of France would be the only stop where Federer might not actually be favored – he has won the French just once, last year. Nadal is still 13-7 against Federer head-to-head, but Federer has avoided him in the past four majors.

Here are Federer’s Bodog odds to win the year’s final three majors individually:

French +225
Wimbledon +125
U.S. Open +225

As or Serena, her Bodog odds to win the Slam of +6000 is a long-shot bet worth taking. After all, she has won four of the past six majors overall. And in the two she didn’t – the 2009 French and U.S. Opens – Serena reached at least the quarterfinals and was brought down by the eventual tournament champion. As with Federer, the clay in Paris would seem to be Serena’s biggest challenge because she has won just one French Open title. She won at Roland Garros in 2002, which began a string of four consecutive major tournaments won in a row – the Serena Slam; since it didn’t take place in a calendar year as it was capped with the 2003 Australian Open.

Here are Serena’s odds to win the year’s final three majors individually:
French +500
Wimbledon +225
U.S. Open +250

But perhaps Serena’s biggest obstacle to a Slam will be her health – she had wraps on practically half her body during the Aussie Open. Serena has said she will play a very limited schedule this year in an effort to save her body as she focuses mainly on the majors much like Tiger Woods does. But when she’s healthy, she’s far and away the player to beat in the Slams, even with former world No. 1 Justine Henin back from retirement and looking in form.
