Elena Dementieva won Rogers Cup 2009

Elena Dementieva defeated Maria Sharapova 6-4 6-3 to win the 14th title of her career and 3rd of 2009 at the Rogers Cup at Centre Court, Rexall Centre in Toronto. Rogers Cup is one of the biggest titles that Elena has won. Congratulations Elena!
Dementieva also became the second consecutive Russian to win Rogers Cup, as fans were treated to fabulous tennis in the event’s first all-Russian final. Dementieva also raised her career head-to-head record with Sharapova to 3-8.
It was a long match, just over 2 hours and Elena was playing a player who was fighting until the end. Elena now leads the US Open Series standings and the only player who can stop her is Flavia Pennetta if she wins New Haven.
For Dementieva, it’s another significant accomplishment on her career resume, with a Grand Slam title as the only real challenge left. For now, she is simply thrilled to be a champion at Rogers Cup. This victory worth a lot for Dementieva as she moved back to her #4 position in the ranking which was overtook by Jelena Jankovic on the previous week. Elena will now take a week off and her next tournament will be the 4th and final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open and she will be going in as one of the favourites.

Flavia Pennetta wins LA Women’s Tennis title

Flavia Pennetta took advantage of error-prone Samantha Stosur for a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the LA Women’s Tennis Championships on Sunday, giving the Italian her second title of the year.
Pennetta followed up a three-set semifinal victory over Maria Sharapova by making quick work of Stosur, an Aussie doubles specialist who has yet to win a WTA Tour singles title. She is 0-5 in career finals.
Stosur’s serve let her down with eight double faults. She was broken four times, including three in the second set when she connected on just 52 percent of her first serves.
Stosur also struggled with her forehand, which led to many of her 32 unforced errors. Pennetta made just 16 unforced errors and kept the Aussie on the run throughout.
“My serve was very good,” the Italian said. “I was very aggressive and I went to the net a few times and every time I went there, I won the point. That was a big step to improve my game.”
Pennetta reached the final in Carson last year, losing to Dinara Safina, the world’s top-ranked player who lost in the third round here. Pennetta defeated seventh-ranked Vera Zvonareva in the quarterfinals, her third victory this year over a top-10 player. [Read More]

Del Potro defends against Roddick in final
Juan Martin Del Potro edged top seed Andy Roddick to successfully defend his Legg Mason Classic title in Washington with a 3-6 7-5 7-6 victory in Sunday’s final. Roddick, who had never been beaten in a Washington final, bravely saved three match points, but his marginally long forehand proved his undoing. Del Potro is the first man since Andre Agassi in 1999 to win back to back titles at the hardcourt tournament. The Argentine produced five aces in the deciding tiebreaker which he took on his fourth match-point when the Hawk-Eye review system upheld a forehand winner. “I did my best services ever in my life,” Del Potro told the official ATP Tour Web site www.atpworldtour.com after making 19 aces in the grueling two and a half hour match. Sweltering and humid conditions made it difficult for both players and Del Potro admitted it had been tough. “After the first set I couldn’t move any more. It was impossible. It was serve and one more ball. If you run, you die.” Roddick, playing his first tournament since his five-set defeat to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final also believed conditions proved a factor. The three-time tournament winner in Washington had been afforded the honor of playing night matches all week and found the afternoon heat stifling. To be honest, it hasn’t been a typical Washington summer, he said. “Today was brutal. To play (at 2:30) was tough. Credit to him for winning. The guy has been a solid top five player for over a year now.” Roddick went a set up with a single break of service in the opener, but was broken twice in the second set as the second seed leveled. Del Potro fell behind to an early break in the decider, but Roddick double faulted on break point to even the set at three-all. Del Potro opened the tie-breaker with an ace and three more gave him a 6-3 lead. Roddick, who had never been beaten in a Washington final, bravely saved three match points, but his marginally long forehand proved his undoing. Del Potro is the first man since Andre Agassi in 1999 to win back to back titles at the hardcourt tournament.
